What's new

Gents, show off those Dopp kits...

thanks Krisbarger....they do appear to make a very fine made product and the workmanship look amazing on all their stuff.

back to DOPP's.

just for kicks, has anyone had any experience with the Rawlings bags? yes, the Baseball glove maker.

not sure they are worth some of the asking prices though.

I have the older style messenger bag produced by Rawlings and the quality is top notch. I also own some luggage accessories and the padfolio. I have no reason to believe it wouldn't last for decades.

On a side note, it wasn't until a couple years ago that Rawlings brought all of their design and crafting in house. Any needed repairs or service would be a breeze. Their customer service is fantastic.

I have this Versace bag that was a Dad's day gift last year with more of my (wife's actually) favorite cologne. I like the taller profile actually which fits my seabag and messenger bag well. It is heavy weight canvas with a nice leather bottom and sturdy metal zipper.

Along with the basics of soap, shampoo, aftershave razor etc i also keep motion sickness pills, tylenol and Vitamin D.

That Colgate tube is a swell idea,

I've never really found one that I am satisfied with. Not because of build quality but the layout. A typical dump and grab Dopp kit reminds me of the Gatemouth style toolbags with the too short pockets. Everything winds up in the bottom anyway. Utilitarian and simple but can lead to some messes. After spending what seems life WAY too much time on the net looking for something custom or semi-custom, I ran across a video of a leather maker who was showing how he makes tool bags for the cruiser bikes. These are the style that strap to the forks of the bike. He showed some of his prior work leading up to the how to. One really stood out to me. So I may contact him or some other bag maker and talk with them about it. Sans the straps and buckles for the forks of course and with some dividers added.. And it would have to be a bit taller and wider and likely lined with something. Anyway, it was enough to pique my interest. I inserted it at the point where he shows the model that caught my attention. Look at the 1:39 mark.

Cheers, Todd

Here is my traveling Dopp. I picked it up at an estate sale. 40's era elephant hide. A bit of leather oil and it is ready to serve for another 50-60 years. Plenty of room inside, I am usually gone for 2 to 4 weeks at a time. So I have to take plenty of shave supplies.

That, good man is the post of the day. Elephant hide anything is rather rare these days let alone finding a nice kit like that at an estate sale. Tell me you got if for next to nothing as well. I can never seem to find great items like this. Would you mind to post a photo of it opened? Thanks for sharing.

Cheers, Todd

Todd, no problem with a couple more pics. As I said, I picked it up at an estate sale for the princely sum of 10 bucks.
I have had it for a couple years now and have taken it with on all my trips. The leather was in great shape as it the liner, I just gave it a treatment of beeswax leather oil, and it is nearly like new. I tend to use a Gem single edge when traveling, since I can store the used blades in the blade case. And with a tweezers, retrieve one and continue to use it, if it still has life. For my brush a turn back, best badger. And for my lather bowl, a silicone bowl I picked up at a camping store. It squishes flat but retains its shape. I can travel for weeks and know that I can start my day with a great shave.

this summer, I was working 3 jobs and commuting from PA to western NY to central NY each week. My dopp bag was priceless and I found it worked so well that I have a hard time putting things back in my drawers. DR Harris bar shampoo is the perfect travel companion (especially for airlines)

I ended up ordering one of these - I haven't had a real toiletry bag in many years (I currently use Zip-Loc bags, but digging stuff out of them isn't particularly convenient). I didn't realize that you can get a leather Dopp for $25-30 . . . I figured that these things were always $100+ indulgences. The other contenders were AmeriLeather and Dopp on Amazon.com.

Here's hoping that it's soft and compressible leather, durable, and easily cleaned!
