What's new

First Tabac experience-- really mediocre.

I don't know anything about Tabac soap, except what I read on B&B, but I do know that you cannot give a decent assessment of any soap based on a single use.

Even with soaps I use regularly in my weekly rotation, I generally do not get optimum lather the first time I use it because each one has its own characteristics and idiosyncrasies.

I would advise using any soap for a week before coming to any conclusions, unless you have an immediate allergic reaction or find that you cannot stand the smell.

When I first got tabac, I had trouble making decent lather, so I kind of abandoned using it very soon and just stuck to creams. A couple of days ago, i tried to revisit it, but still had trouble making thick, consistent lather. I tried adding more water and loading more lather, but still the results are very, very bad.

Tar and feather this man!

Seems to me that tabac was made to use with those little bitty itsy bitsy crummy boar brushes from the 40's that every man had. If T will work with those things ... it should work.

:blushing:

It worked much better the second time around. I just needed to load it a lot more than I was used to with glycerin soaps.

I use a Shavemac silvertip with Tabac soap and have never had a problem. It has a pretty forgiving "sweet spot" in terms of water/soap ratio, but the brush does need to be thoroughly loaded. I couldn't live without the stuff. No other soap I've used performs as beautifully and consistently as Tabac. But then, everyone's face is different.

"I used more product...and it worked!"

This is the key with most soaps. When you think you've got enough, add some more.

"When it's time to load the brush, don't talk, load!"

Like many others, Tabac is the benchmark lather I use to help me judge new products, like razors and blades.

But any hard soap will need a few lathers to moisten up the top a little to load up well. Tabac isn't the hardest around, but it does have 'dry' top to begin with. As said, one use isn't going to tell you anything.

There's your problem, too much water. When you are loading the soap it should be close to dry. Shake the water out of the brush, when you finish loading up add water to make lather.

+1

If B&B were an actual physical location, we could just put up a big sign on the wall that says, "USE MORE PRODUCT". Then whenever someone walked into the room saying, "hey guys, I'm having some lather issues...", we all just point to the sign.

A lot of people say the same thing you did, but after awhile, this stuff really grows on you. At first, I hated the smell, but now it is one of my favorites. It grows on you, so like the others have said, give it a good chance.

+1 on the smell. I thought it was mildly irritating at first. I quite like it now. Not sure if the scent aged or I did.
