First Shave With Boxed Large Fellow

Ok, well here is the ABC that I acquired. Pretty sure it's a Gun metal with gold razor.

Thank you again for the great information. Now I need to track down a case and a razor. So, do you think that I should keep going with the tarnish removal or do you think this may be a gunmetal finish?

your case should have this razor

I read that the ABC razors were mix and match. You didn't necessarily have to buy a set with the matching handle. I've seen many more basket weave cases than others, yet they turn up with different handles inside.

Regardless, any ABC is pretty sweet. They are solid and hefty for their size. Agile, nimble, and efficient. Plus they're easy on the eyes.

+1. The heads are a bit more more slim as well making for a comfortable OC shave.

Thank you.......

I have a shell in a basket weave with original outer packaging. I also have a flower in a basket weave. Only damn case I can find an ABC in.

Those big ones sure are nice. My dad likes to hold all of my razors that I buy to see if one fits his big paw, and this one was his favorite. Great shaves to boot.

That is a strange strategy for a big organized company, it seems more like disorganization and a lack of over seeing management styles that may have caused this mismatching of razors.

hillbilly pick,

Nice score on the "enormous lad" and the ABC set! The ABC set is on my list of "must buy" and being in Singapore, my hunting ground is limited to the bay. Hopefully I will score one in the future! Enjoy your sets mate!

Thank you Alex. I want to say that I have seen many of your posts to others in the forum, and you always go above and beyond. Thank you again for the great information. I am still enjoying the shave and am thinking of using it for a week and then putting it away for special occasions.

Next, I think that I am going to try the Shell Pocket Edition that I got in the same lot as I got this Big Fellow. I am sure to have questions about it as well, because I am not sure if the box and razor go together, and I hope that they did not make the flower engraved box in a gun metal version because I have taken the foil/baking-soda and MAAS to it and the "tarnish" started coming off but it also looks as though it my be brassing. Anyway, that is for a later thread.

+1 to that!

That is possible.......or it may just have been an issue of supply and demand. ie lets use whatever inventory we have.

I'm betting it's just really heavy tarnish. I had this set that had me wondering a while back that turned out to just be a very heavily and evenly tarnished silver case. The gunmetal finish wouldn't be incredibly easy to polish away, so unless you're really scrubbing at it if it's coming off easily it's probably tarnish.

One very easy way to tell would be to do a quick test with the aluminum foil and baking soda method. Put a piece of aluminum foil into a dish and lay the case on top of it. Then dissolve some baking soda in a small amount of boiling water -- just enough to cover the bottom of your dish, but not enough to reach above the opening of the case and overflow into the interior -- and pour it into the dish. If you're dealing with tarnished silver the tarnish will very quickly start to lighten and disappear from the parts of the case that are submerged. If it's a gunmetal finish a whole lot of nothing will happen.

We don't have any indication that things were utterly chaotic, and certainly nothing that would indicate that customers could choose a case and handle separately. The ads and catalogs that show the various ABC sets do consistently match handles and cases as numbered offerings, and that would have been what the retailer ordered from the jobber who supplied them.

But the number of mismatches that you come across in the wild seems higher than you'd expect could be accounted for just by sellers matching up random pieces into sets after the fact. I can pretty easily imagine QA rejections in Gillette's manufacturing processes leading to imbalances in their stocks of the different style pieces -- for example, more cases of a particular style than you had matching handles, or vice versa. In that situation you could either hold the excess stock back till the missing parts caught up, or you could go ahead and match the surplus up with excess parts from a different style. I'm inclined to think that the latter did happen, at least on occasion even if it wasn't a regular occurrence, in order for Gillette to keep up with demand.

Turtle, I just wanted to let you know that I have placed my Veg order and have a new 12 oz. bottle on the way. I also ordered some Jeris hair tonic with oil, and a 12 oz Citrus Musk. I also went ahead and grabbed some of the Howard's feed-n-wax.

Shwoo! I hope I have enough Special Reserve to hold me over till the Veg comes in!

That is quite a jewel you found

As far as shaving without the VEG.... NO WAY.. grow a beard until your next shipment of the VEG arrives.
