Film honing demo on youtube

This is the Lapping film its ok to post as its listed as BIN 3M Lapping Film Aluminum Oxide Sheets Superfinishing Polishing Abrasive Paper | eBay
that's for an A4 sheet of 3m lapping film and all grades listed
Thanks very much, I hadn't seen that one. I'm guessing I could start on 12 microns to set a bevel unless I was dealing with a really bad edge that needed a lot of steel removing? Does 12-5-3-1 seem like a reasonable progression (with just 3-1 for re-honing razors)?

I will read the threads Slash gave a link to so I may find the answers in there.

@Twelvefret - I emailed the vendor you linked to a couple of days ago. Trying to get him to use First Class Package post for $13.75 because I don't want to pay $32 in shipping. :)

I started on 30 microns with a non abused edge.

Have no idea why the difference. I contacted Nanolap by email. The sales manager responded that I could purchase lapping film one sheet at a time.
Yep that's where I just ordered mine from, still waiting on them though. Starting to run out of patience, but when they get here I'm sure I'll forget all about it.

I use 30u for bevel set and it is fine. It isn’t a razor eater at all.
OK, thank you. I think I’ll start this journey with a cheap hollow ground razor I bought a few years ago. It doesn’t look like it’s ever been used so I can try setting a bevel on it. H.C Wentworth - they only existed for 4 years apparently.

And you guys think jnats and coticules are complicated!

I kid...I kid...

You can usually find a Belgian hone for less than 10 bucks if you look around.
They were ubiquitous at one time; there's still millions of vintage ones out there.

Fumbling about.
I hope we soon figure out how to buy the best stuff and only what we need in suitable quantities with reasonable shipping costs.

Happy shaves,

Here's another vendor. They have single sheets but not all micron sizes. Link.

Here's their micron to grit stuff (not that they have all the stuff here):

Here is still another vendor. This actually looks like it might be the ticket for me, but I'm not buying yet. Still...

Link.

I just don’t know why I would buy one. Film is simple cheap and you get the same result every time. With a coticle, you likely get an 8k edge and 12k with jnat. With film and pasted balsa you get 200k.

Don't know until you try. You are probably too spoiled, on the sharrrrrp edge, but I suggest if the opportunity presents itself you try someone else's coticule edge. Don't buy the rock until you try the edge. Same with Jnat or other naturals.

What do you mean he is too spoiled on a sharp edge? He's never honed that I know of and has just started shaving with a SR. I don't think Jim or I know enough to have an opinion at this point.

The old time barbers and shavers had to depend on something else since they didn’t have all these options. I am curious if they just figured out how to shave.

Actually I think Steve probably has quite a few shaves by now, and has been Method honing for some time.

You are correct my man! I am spoiled and lovin’ it. If I had a bottle of 12 yr old McCallan Scotch and somebody handed me a bottle of Rebel Yell I wonder which I would drink. Let me think........
