What's new

Farrell's Barber Shop and other Jacksonville Traditional Shave Options.

Thanks for the reviews of the two shops. Maybe when things slow down for everyone, we can plan a meet-up sometime in the Summer/Fall. I live in mandarin and will have to definitely check out Angelo's. Another Barbershop here in Mandarin is "The Great Hair After" in the shopping center by Publix/CVS at Losco and Old St Augustine Rd. they used to be behind Walgreens on Old Field Crossing- very strange name, but they do give shaves and they give a real nice haircut. I never did get a shave, but I've seen several people getting them in the past. I stopped going as I started cutting my own hair to save a few bucks.

Flowbee? http://www.flowbee.com/

Sounds good to me. I have been to Cheers a couple of times and it is fine, because it seems pretty mellow (in the daytime, anyway) and I can smoke a cigar. I was going to try Monkey's Uncle because I hear it is better, but I must have passed it and I didn't want to turn around.

if you like a cigar and to drink in a more mellow place you should try island girls.

Love Island Girl. A bit upscale for my typical J-Ville afternoon, but good nonetheless. I go to the one on Gate, but plan to hit the Ponte Vedra sometime.

so are there any local places to buy shaving supplies I don't know of?

Other than AOS, a few mall spots and perhaps the barbershops discussed here, the only place I can think of is The Superior Shave. Mostly an Internet vendor, but they are located in Jax Beach and Jarod says you are welcome to stop by--probably best to call first.

I'm planning a meeting with Jarod at The Superior Shave sometime in June/July as I'm wanting to journey into Straight razor shaving and want to see some straights in person. Check out hones, strops, etc and get everything I'll need.

Great! I also plan to go, but it may have to wait until I return from a July vaca--maybe September or so. Please report back about your visit. Jarod seems like a good guy.

Hi, Jacksonville native .... Getting a good barber shave was a goal of mine for my b-day and the bad shaves 6 years running from diffrent barbers is what got me into wet shaving . That said I worked a 12 day streak with no day off about a year ago and decided I deserved a relaxing day and had seen that fellow B and B member had opened up a barber shop called Pomenade and Tonic and was just 3 miles from the house . , Ferrel himself wasnt in but a older gentleman was . I got the shave with seven hot towels and though not BBS was still a strong DFS shave with no irritation and was a quite pleasant . The staff was friendly and they look like they do steady business ( they are just up they road from me so I pass by often ) So even though Ive only been the once Im going to give them a firm double thumbs up . If there is some sort of jacksonville get together even if its just for lunch and some beers Im down . If its closer to fall I know Kickbacks gastro pub is building a beer garden ......

I went to Angelo's yesterday for a haircut, not a shave. I had attempted my third straight shave on Saturday and carved my face up pretty well and still had some redness on my neck from he razor burn. When the barber asked about a shave, I commented about my straight shave the previous day and gave the three barbers in the shop a nice chuckle.

This place was really a nice place. As some had described previously, it is a fairly traditional looking barber shop. Strops hanging from the very nice barber chairs that are in this place. The art is all barber/shaving related and they sell Proraso and Lucky Tiger products as well as use them for shaves. They do offer a nice hot lather shave for the back of your neck when you get a haircut, followed by a hot towel.

I don't remember my barber's name, but he used to cut hair for the Navy. He gave me a very thorough "high and tight" with my specifications- skin on the side, a 3 setting on top. The barber was personable and asked many questions about my wet shaving experience and I did tell him I came in because of the talk on B&B. i do believe Angelo, the owner was in there as he showed some interest as I discussed B&B.

Overall, a great experience. Well worth the $16 price tag for a great haircut. I will go in with a couple days growth next time and get a shave. I didn't notice the prices, but from another member's comments, they seem reasonable as well.

I will return for another visit for sure.

Small world- I live in Jacksonville too! I've heard about Pomade and Tonic, but haven't been there yet. I have gotten a straight razor shave (and head shave) at "A Prestige Barber Shop" near Tinseltown. It was a really good experience, but a bit pricey (I think it was ~$60 for both head and face).

There aren't a lot of brick-and-mortar places to get supplies as far as I can tell. I popped into the AOS before, but left after making note of the prices.

Thanks for the update. As of today, it looks like I will go to Angelo's this coming Friday afternoon. I have to see a client in Mandarin around noon, so that works well for me. I figure I can enjoy a cigar and cocktail at Cheers before/after the "shave and a haircut". I'm just a tad worried about the Navy barber. I have longish curly hair--more like ringlets, really. I'd better not walk out of there with a brush cut! :scared:

Another possibility in J-ville. Thanks for the quick review.. I saw some not-so-positive reviews about Prestige a while ago. But I'm more inclined to believe a review from someone here, than from a random person on the Internet. (Wait, aren't we random people on the Internet?)

Just left Angelo's and posting this, with cigar and bourbon in hand, from the bar in the next plaza (Cheers). Angelo's has a shave and a haircut combos for $25 and $35. For $35 you get a two pass shave with Caswell Massey cream, applied with a silvertip badger brush. The $25 deal gets you a single pass with Lucky Tiger brushless cream. I opted for the $35 package.

Dominic (AKA Angelo, the owner) is a very personable guy--who wore a bowler hat, of all things. It is a very laid back place--no rushing here. First he gave me, what looks to be, an exceptional haircut. I won't really know for a day or two if I really like it. I have a full head of very curly hair--not all barbers handle that well. Nice neck shave with hot lather and a first rate beard/eyebrow trim.

On to the shave. I had my choice of scents and I opted for the almond. The CM almond is pretty intense, when smelled right from the jar. Luckily it isn't quite so strong when applied. First he rubbed some preshave oil on my face (all the products were CM almond) and covered my face with a hot towel. Then he applied the lather with the silvertip and covered that with another hot towel. Once removed another coat of lather and then started shaving with a vintage Dovo straight. He has various razors to choose from, but he says this is is favorite. Another hot towel, and more lather and then a second pass X the grain. An ice cold towel followed. Then, while the face was still cold, he looked for any hairs that might be standing up and carefully went and did a bit of follow-up on those. Finished with a synth brush and powder followed by after shave balm

BBS shave, or damn close. Probably as close as my skin can tolerate. One very small weeper which he paid a little extra attention to, at the end. I think my face will be fine. I'll know for sure tomorrow, but right now I feel fantastic.

So my prelim report is very positive. I highly recommend Angelo's and I will be back.

A bit more to come on Angelo's but the Internet connection here is a bit hinky and I need to start concentrating on this fine cigar and order another cocktail.

Hey guy's, Farrell A.K.A. Barberofdeville here. My shop name is Pomade & Tonic Traditional Barbershop. All my Employees on the Barber Floor are licensed Barbers. If you check the other shops its a mix of cosmetologists with one or two barbers. I do have one stylist on hand who has a room for women or men who prefer one. All my barbers are highly qualified and the shop, as well as many reviews can be found on instagram, yelp, and google. It would be awesome if you would patronise all of the shops mentioned on here than create a post dedicated to your research findings. Be not afraid to get a shave or haircut from any of my barbers. They all do a fantastic job.

You are my next stop. My haircut at Angelo's was great and the shave was fine, too (I went to the owner who is multi-licensed). Angelo's is a bit more convenient to me, but I will travel, if necessary, for a better product. I look forward to trying your shop.

What days are you available

Just booked. Thanks for the offer of a free shave. I'll make a full trip of it and get a cut and a shave. Looking forward to it.
