I hear you Hank...but, that's 1/2 the fun. It's like cooking. You start off with a recipe someone published, using ingredients they recommend and you slowly make modifications until you find something that is your creation . Same thing with shaving. The products out there are fantastic, and a lot of man hours have gone into finding a formulation(s) that most will find great. But keep in mind that the operating word is "most". They are made for the average skin/face...for most, that works out fine, but for some, it needs to be tweaked until the right formulation is found.
This is strictly my opinion and depends if you have the patience. interest and time to play around with the chemistry. I am lucky enough to have a career where I make my own time and don't have to be anywhere until I am ready, therefore time is something I have .
