What's new

Ever feel like you are just helping the seller on the bay?

So many people don't know how auctions work and bid up the price. Its a fools game to start bidding early in any auction. Just like on Barrett-Jackson car auctions where you are not getting that auctioned Ferarri Enzo for $50k, you won't get that excellent user grade Fat boy for 99 cents or at any price up to your $20.00 maximum bid so why bother? There are only three ways to buy on the bay. 1. Buy it now/make an offer, 2. bid only once during the last 5 seconds, 3. Use a snip like GIXEN. With the last two, put in a fair price of what you are prepared to pay and stick to it. Its not like another one won't come along soon if you don't get it. Everything else drives up the price. That said, BST is still the best deal out there for Buyers and Sellers and a great service to members of this great online community.

Use a sniping service like Gixen. Place your bid, set and forget. If you win great, if not set another auction up in your sniper. This will also help you get the best deal by sniping at the last minute.

I've seen this service mentioned before, but I have never used it. It sounds like what I do when I bid on eBay: I wait until someone places a bid first, then I place my bid at the price I'm willing to pay - something way over the other bidder's price. Then, automatic bidding takes over from there. The actual price that I bid doesn't show publically, but my bid will go up automatically if someone else places a bid. If someone goes above my bid, then it's que sera, sera. Because auctions often end while sleeping, I have to do this (or I wouldn't b able to sleep).

Does a service like Gixen do anything that I'm not already doing for myself using eBay's built in features?

I learned not to bother with eBay. Just check the BST here and if you can't wait post a want to buy. You will be dealing with more knowledgable sellers.... and friendlier.

+1 for most of the time. I did however get a sweet toggle for $160 on the bay. It really is like a game of chance, and how many people have seen that particular item you are looking at before the listing ends.

In a word, yes! Gixen places your bid at the last 6 sec. When you place yours manually, there is usually time for someone to respond and push the price higher. No strategy will foil automatic bidding if the automatic bidder has set their max bid high enough though.

I got a birth-quarter from '63 for $40 and thought I paid a bit much, but worth it for birth-quarter.
$61 is high unless it's cased and in awesome condition.

Except for me... I bid at 2 seconds

Seriously, I've only lost a couple of auctions in the last 15 years.

I would guess that Father's day has something to do with the price increase. Also you are competing against so many other people on ebay in comparison to the b/s/t here

Good. That's what I do. I use automatic bidding. "High enough" is something that a person has to decide for themselves. Set your price, and if someone goes over your price, well... you don't win the razor, but you won't end up paying more than you wanted to.

Sniped a red tip. Gixen rocks. I didn't even want a red tip, yet... lol.

Still have some auctions on Slim's running, probably some more red tips I need to cancel too.

I guess I am starting my RAD...
Just used gixen the other day, and got my first ever ebay item.
A Slim for 23.50.
One other nice feature of GIXEN is that if you only want 1 red tip, you can put them all into groups (Group 1 for example). You could also create a group of Slims and put them into a different Group (Group 2), and it will only win 1 of the items in each group, and cancel all the rest after you've won one.

That's awesome! I'll do that now! Thanks for the tip.

I definitely think that it is Father's Day around the corner that is driving up the prices of these razors. As all of the advice stated above, be patient and stick with your set price. I bought my Gillette Slim Adjustable on eBay for just $25 back in last July of last year.

Just sniped $14.99 + shipping @ 18.76

Not horrible, but needs some love. I now have 4 razors....

Should look real nice after bit of cleaning and a dab of polish. Cool stuff.

I'm hoping so. Will check some threads on cleaning. Now I'm looking for a slant. Maybe a cleaner, cheap Slim/Fatboy.

If you are on the hunt for a razor to collect, why not your birth year? Or even narrow it down to year and quarter. I'm on the hunt for mine. If you were born after 87 I think you may be out of luck.

Here is a great place to start looking for your type of razor(s).

I had a bid up on a 75 adjustable, but it's over $125 right now. It's one of my saved searches... I'm patient.
