What's new

Erasmic has reverted back to Tallow

At last someone has seen sense in not just giving in to the "vegetarian/Vegan/windfalling, tree hugging minority" [please note the sarcastic tone here... I'm mocking the small minority of said groups that campaign for everything to be vegetarian, on matter the cost to company/earth/ or tohers enjoyment of the product, ala Mars bar, manky now they're vegi....] , who do not realise that the palm oil, whilst being useless in these soaps for shaving, also causes more rainforest to be destroyed to produce it!

But perhaps they just foundsales had gone massively down after a rush to buy up tallow stock and were feeling the pinch????

I may however buy a few sticks and uses them for shower soap.....

Read a thread on another board a couple of weeks ago. Fellow posted his correspondence with Erasmic wherein they essentially said they couldn't make the Palm Oil soap work and were re-re-formulating.

Well, this morning I was mooching around town and found, in my favourite cheapo chemist, the Erasmic stick; first ingredient listed as sodium tollowate. All their stock was the same. A few weeks ago they were all Palm Oil. And Erasmic commented that there will still be some of it around for a while, so check the label if you're after the Tallow first stuff.

I'd forgotten how much I enjoy the scent of this soap :001_cool:

Ignatius, and the rest of you who have picked up the new re-release of the TALLOW Erasmic Shaving Stick (per this thread) -- I need for you to do something for me, please.

Can you please have a look at the inside of the box, and report back as to whether the soap is wrapped in wax paper or foil?

Secondly, would you mind actually putting the shaving stick to use and report your results -- in PM is fine if you prefer not to post publicly? I know that this might go against the practice of using up your current Erasmic sticks before cracking open a new one, but it's fairly important. I'll explain why (including pics) after several of you have reported back.

Thanks,
Jimmy.

Good news! It's always nice to see a soap maker that hasn't lost his mind like many others with their anti-tallow freakiness.

My tallowate stick is wrapped in wax paper. It'll be a couple of days before I can use it and report back.

I picked one up today at the local chemists, for £0.69.
BroJohn, mine is in the old cardboard packaging, and is 50g.
I have never used the old formulation, or the old reformulation, but I must say, I'm impressed. Very slick, very moisturising.
I do quite like the scent, though I have quite a few soaps with nicer scents, some of which do not perform as well as this.
At 69p, it is oustanding. I prefer it to Palmolive, at any rate.
May well stock up.

I don't understand why this is so hard to find now in any formula. When I was growing up, Erasmic was the standard issue shave soap around here, I rarely seen anything else. I used it myself for years and yet suddenly, nobody seems to stock it. Most chemists stock the cream, a few stock the bowl soap but I haven't seen an Erasmic shave stick for sale in years. It is my favourite soap. I am using a Palmolive stick and it's good but (traditional tallow) Erasmic is better and longer lasting. I have never even seen the unloved formula so have no idea if it deserves it's poor reputation or not.

I know it sells on ebay but it costs at least twice of what it should do and then there is postage to factor in as well.

Oh the old formula definitely deserves it's bad press in my eyes. The lather was terrible and the stick itself had a crumbly chalk-like consistency that I've not seen in any other product. Loved the smell though, so I'm eagerly awaiting the tallow version becoming widely available.

Sorry for the late reply Jimmy. Firstly, the stick is in the white paper - so that remains non-re-re-formulated. The sticks scent is identical to what it always was - I don't recall a difference between the old tallow and palm oil sticks, and this one remains the same int hat regard. The performance is, I believe, the same as the original one, producing the billowing lather associated with tallow soaps and not the thin filmy lather of the palm oil one.

This is clearly a regional thing - the stick is everywhere here (northwest), but the cream and soap in the bowl are almost never seen - whereabout are you?

I've found the same to be true in West Yorkshire.
Many shops have the stick, and to a lesser extent, the brush, but I have never seen the cream or bowl soap.

I hoarded on tallow sticks before the retrograde reformulation in preparation for the tallowpocalypse.
I'm glad they realized their mistake and tallow is baaack!

I've received 3 Erasmic sticks yesterday. I wanted to use one of these for my shave yesterday's evening.
On the package, in the INCI-list it says: "Sodium Tallowate".
So I was pretty sure I got the re-re-formulated version which should work again like the old one.

I tried to lather up with my Semogue 2000 as I would do with any of my sticks (speick, wilkinson, palmolive).
The result was lather with large air bubbles and many many tiny ones.
I tried more soap, less water -> same bad thin lather.
Everthing I did led to the same result: airy, thin and unstable lather with large bubbles.
It's consistency was like a bubble bath. The foam hovered in the air. It was unbelievable! Like I would have lathered up shampoo, hand-soap or similar.

This sounds so much like the re-formulated veggy-stick. BUT as already said, on the package it says Tallowate.

Can anyone help me?

I would say try either, more product (I know) or filtered water. See if it change something.

more product? i think i've used quite a lot (0,5cm) for lathering up. thin like with a glycerine soap (never used a glycerin soap, but i know the pictures of glycerin-soap-lather)

Mmm, so, almost no water + 0.5 cm of soap produced poor lather? I think it's the water...
