What's new

Email choices

I have Yahoo+ email, and they've just changed formats. The new one is awful, and falls into the category of typical corporate moves by bean-counters who "fix" things that aren't broken. Also typical is them doubling down, saying it's here to stay, despite a huge number of complaints. So I'm going to move over to Gmail, which I've had as a backup for quite a while, and also just signed up for free Proton. It's a bloody hassle transferring my contact info over to the other mailers, and I'm moving slowly. Plenty of Big Picture things to be concerned about, so further disruptions in the Force like this piddling little annoyance is unwelcome.

My wife and I have had many emails accounts since AOL in 1993. GMX.com (German, I believe) is the best I've ever used. I've been using it for over 10 years as my primary email with no problems. I get very few spams, and can create filters and directories for people/companies I regularly communicate with, or order from. My wife who hates change, even more than me, stuck with her gmail. I tried to convince her to move to GMX from gmail, but she refused until she was locked out of her gmail account for no reason while on vacation one year. She had used gmail as a primary for years, for our banks, credit cards and communicating with kids and grandkids, but was never able to find out why she was suddenly locked out. It was only then that she switched to gmx, having to change all her/our accounts. She has also had no problems with gmx, or I would be the first one to hear if she did.

Same here, people are often surprised when I tell them my address is myfirstname.mylastname at gmail.com. "What no numbers?" they say 😅
I was also "Invited" to Gmail.
But shockingly my name was already taken so I had to add an 01 then period last name.
Hard to believe there was multiple Jayson Lee's joining Gmail that early!!

Very strange to me.
Jay

Edit to add I have never had any issues with Gmail.

Gmail and hotmail.

Your story reminds me of Garmin "improving" their iPhone app. The old app was far superior. Why change what works great and isn't broken?

Then again, I've seen it at my work. Get solid software in place and someone justifies "releasing the next platform". I watched it sink the ship at my last company. I get it to some extent, but don't fix what isn't broken.

I have 5 email accounts. 2 are my and the internets first email companies, AOL which my email address/name had to get changed to fit in the newest update in the 90s early 00s and that address then got changed to AIM the other is an original Yahoo email.

About 15ish years ago with gubment things going online and companies using online applications i got a GMail address. And use that for when i get the chance to shop online.

I have/had a Microsoft account that i needed to have with the last company i worked for, different things i/we needed to do or access need those emails.

The 5th one is/was an internet provider one, Optimum. I had this email on & off throughout my internet life but probably only looked through it a handful of times.

AIM & Yahoo are typically the emails i use for forum signups and general signups for spam, i mean store/website email updates. And my AOL/AIM address i will have till i die again.

GMail has been great for me and with me keeping serious things in a different email i don't have to sort through a ton of spam for 1 i want or need. And i don't get any spam emails through GMail.

And you can stick a "." (Dot) In between any letter or all of them or any combination of them and it all comes back to your main address.
