I apologize if I seem a stickler for usage, but as I am an English teacher I cannot (and will not!) give up the fight. There needs to be an oppositional voice to the decimation of language (at least for teenagers who are the targets of most advertising).

(EDIT: After thinking about it for a minute, Strat is right! Changes in bold, and the irony is not lost on me!)

Corrections in bold.

(Sorry Gus, it's my job.)

Since the teenagers are the object in the sentence (advertisers are targeting them), then "whom" is correct.

I respectfully disagree, since the teenagers are not the main subject of the sentence, which is advertising (see the Thomas Jefferson example).

Now, let's get on to "then" versus "than."

Hey! Did you delete your post? I call shenanigans!!

(EDIT: After thinking about it for a minute, Strat is right! Changes in bold, and the irony is not lost on me!)

It is always (and only) about the irony. Sorry for being such a smarty pants.

I will always respectfully admit my mistakes, at least when it comes to grammar and usage! (I am officially humbled.) But I also reserve the right to delete a post that makes me look even more like a jack-***!

Cop Fodder.

If doughnuts were banned, would the police die from starvation?

As a Deputy I fail to see why we get such a bad rap for this. Seriously, EVERYONE likes donuts. Who the hell doesn't like Donut's? I think being a LEO just makes you an aficianado of sorts. While speaking to other LEO's its "Donut" because that's what the box says.

Donut(s)

Well I have one issue with this poll.

Doughnut or Donut, no.

It is Doughnuts and Donuts as in I eat at least four Donuts in one sitting.

There is no way I'm going to eat just one Donut.

Hmmm...Donuts.

edit: "doughnut"

I like the way "doughnut" looks, makes it sound less unhealthy than it is, though I prefer typing "donut" for brevity's sake.
Of course, I prefer olie bollen.
Um ... Chip ... not to quibble, but ... "brevity" and "a Chip thread" are not really thought of as being very compatible.
Who knows, maybe someday the apostrophe really will just mean "look out! Here comes an S!" and maybe we'll no longer use hyphens (I hate them anyway).
I would venture to point out that hyphens hate you too, but that would be far-fetched. :001_tt2:

Thanks for fighting the good fight against the decimation of language, but the metric system seems pretty well entrenched in most parts of the world, so I think most people will continue counting by base 10 for the foreseeable future. :frown:

Did you know that decimate means to eliminate 10%? I think if you can preserve 90% of the language you're doing quite well.

(Nothing personal, I just like messing with teachers )

Not at first, no. But if you consider the sheer size of some of my posts I'm sure you can understand why I like to shave off a few characters where possible.

That's the first time I've seen you back down from something just because it's far-fetched.

Given the definition of decimation, I think using the metric system is a logical choice.

You know, sometimes it's really hard not to end a sentence with a preposition.

That is one of those things I learn every time I mess it up, which happens about ten percent of the time.

What are you getting at?

Urgh, recursion and fractions before morning coffee... Or maybe just fractions. It's before morning coffee so I'm not sure.

I guess I should have been more detailed on that last part. I had to edit my post six times before posting it... Ever since that episode of Big Bang Theory I realized I also tend to end my sentences with prepositions.

What a fascinating thread. They don't usually last this long and still be on topic once Chip shows up.

What can I say? I love bastardizing the English language. This thread was too good to pass up.

Actually, my "question" was a not-so-subtle joke. (hint: look at how I ended the sentence...)
