Dignity and the Wet shave

In theory!
In Karve's world, it might actually be a lot more than a week!
The good news is that it's not mega expensive in case of the worst case scenario.
I was more worried about my Wolfman!
Well, if I were to put myself on the waitlust waitlist for a WR3 in high polish Stainless (or maybe bronze or Ti...tough decision) with either a .35 or .40 gap, with a Darwin handle and a WRA2 stand, I suppose I'd have to do that eyes wide open on the tariff topic.

But that's not happening, so I don't have to worry.

Yep. Not happening

You haven't even received or tried your first GEM and you've already put together a WR3 plan.
That's the spirit! 😂

Yeah, it is like the duty free alcohol limit. My dad taught me, if you want to bring back 5 bottles of scotch, just do it, declare them, and pay the tariff. It is often cheaper than you think.

Speeding is also not worth losing sleep. Just go to court, pay the fine, pay a little more for insurance. As long as you don't have a severe problem, the points will drop off and you will be fine.

You will have 3-4 months before your name comes up so that gives you time to try out some GEMs! If there are tariffs you can always decline to proceed at no cost 😁 .

I had only used a GEM 5-10 times before I ordered a WR3!! 🤣

That's what I'm afraid of. Seriously though, I already have some nice AC razors, Oneblades, and a Valet Autostrop. The $15 Gem will need to make a compelling argument for me to move forward further. I will also have to sell off something to make room for anything beyond the $15 used one

The things that keep me away from modern CNC Gem razors are vintage designs well suited to a modern enthusiast, with a broad range of efficiency, and a lack of choices in modern blades. We have one excellent blade, but I like variety. Further, the tall flat of a Gem blade doesn't really make sense to me.

The injector seems like the best thick blade safety razor format. AC blades are too long, Gem too tall. Injector is limited by blade and razor choices, though. A Schick Injector with a Schick blade is a great razor, but again, very few options.

SE format, i.e., half-DE, conceptually seems like a great idea. However, I haven't found a razor design I love. Leaf Thorn/Twig are alright; the Pearl was a bad design; there just isn't anything available that has called out to me. Also, the width of a DE blade, centered on its handle, doesn't really give me problems in practice. I have a Zamak Yaqi head. I should try that at some point.

AC, Hair Shaper, and A77 blades are all pretty good for shavettes.

I haven't tried any modern Gem razors, but I don't really get excited about any of them, either.

Shopping for Fragrance

I spent a couple of hours with Pan Nurcik at his boutique in Ostrołęka today. I've been buying colognes from him for a number of years, but learned something new today. His sister was my mother-in-law's elementary school student for four years, and his elementary school teacher was my mother-in-law's best friend!

Pan Nurcik has traveled all over the world, curating a collection of perfumes that would rival the finest shops in Paris or Milan. Looking for a hard-to-find Chanel fragrance? He might have them. Want to explore fougere's? Piece of cake. Trying to find an Oud that's well balanced? He's got that covered.

I had three objectives for this trip relative to cologne: I wanted to sample as many of my "must try's" as possible, I wanted to sample a broad array of agarwood (Oud) dominant fragrances, and i wanted a tour of the scents from mid-east producers. Over the course of the afternoon (with breaks and multiple trips to the crystal coffee bean bowl) I tried about 50 fragrances on paper and came up with a short list of 8. After my nose settled down, I met my wife at the store and we quickly winnowed the list down to 5:
  • Amouage Search - A lovely, smokey, woodey fragrance with Ocean notes
  • Amouage Silver Oud - A nicely balanced Oud that is not as overpowering as Creed Royal Oud or Tom Ford's offering
  • Amouage Enclave - A fabulous all purpose fragrance good for any occassion
  • Dubai Meyday, very similar to the Amouage Silver Oud, but a bit less subtle
  • Nicolai Cuir Cuba- This was the big surprise of the trip. What an Outstanding fragrance: Multiple layers of tropical fruit, tobaco and magic. Plus, it is readily available online for about $130, shipped. There is a down side: The bottle won't fit in the zip lock bag.
With a tiny spray of each on a wrist or elbow nook, and one on my neck, we went back to the apartment. After a few hours of periodic "smelling", we decided on two Amouage fragrances: The Silver Oud and Enclave. No Chanel, Creed, Polo, Givenchy, Tom Ford or Dior this trip.

We'll be returning to the store tomorrow with zip-lock bags to make sure we'll be able to get them through security. Assuming all goes well, I'll be coming home with two outstanding EDPs. My wife found a wonderful perfume, but she's already forgotten the name. When we go back, she'll pick that up as well.

We did well this trip!

Commerce News:
It was just announced that all packages coming from China & Hong Kong have been temporarily suspended by USPS. No reason has been given!
I wonder if Yaqi will cancel my order for the Ghost 0.90 razor head... They just might.

Edit: I just checked and it's been marked as "shipped".... but there are a couple steps before it would normally leave China.... A distribution center, Chinese Customs, then to the airport awaiting flight.... That usually takes 3 to 4 days... Maybe things will have calmed down by then.

It just says USPS though!
Have you received stuff from Ali through the PO in the past?
Everything I've ever gotten from there (Shield store & Yaqi store) only, has always been through their own shipping channels.
They ship it, it arrives, goes through customs, then it goes through some type of freight forwarder and ultimately has been delivered by some local courier service.

Buckle up, everyone. Gonna be a rough ride.

Looking on the bright side, thus should help curtail acquisition disorders.

Kim (and others), I hope your paid but undelivered Ali orders weren't too expensive.
