Davidoff Cool Water - is it really so generic?

I know Turin is a well-regarded critic, but his is just another nose, no matter how well developed.

Oh yes...I wouldn't base any choices on his word, but he is funny, interesting and does oft give me a direction to look. He has indeed a great nose for dissecting a scent, but the wearing of any of them is YMMV.

He says Antaeus would be better on women too, and I don't get that either.

I always got the impression that Cool Water was Davidoff's most earnest offering, and here's why - Davidoff produces cigars and tobacco products, and everyone knows smokers tend to smell like, well, smoke. Cool Water seemed to me to be a great idea as a cologne for a smoker - enough sillage and freshness to project through any stale cigarette smell, with a clean soapiness for close quarters, and just inoffensive all around. .

I was always wondering why every smoker i know wears the stuff.

I bought and used Cool Water in 2002.
My wife got me some samples of the T&H frags this week and to my untrained nose, I think Freshman is in the same league.

Clubman is also familiar to a scent I used in the past. Maybe Versace Versus?

Untrained or not, your nose is on the right track. T&H reformulated Freshman, along with Clubman and Spanish Leather, early last decade, and took them from being classics in the Trumper league to much more modern fare, reminiscent of a lot of department-store type scents.

I like it :D , the GF hates it becuase I smell like her ex....... go figure.

+1 here, mate. I really like the smell but I've never gotten to wear it. Every girl I've ever dated has said the same thing. It reminds her of her ex (who was invariable a prat), so she won't let me wear it.

Bought a bottle once, despite those proscriptions. It mysteriously disappeared that same night, never to be seen again.

There was a Green Irish Tweed vs Cool Water poll last year on basenotes, where the majority of members openly despise Creed. The Creed was preferred 3 to 1. That says a heck of alot more than Luca Turin's preference, a known Creed critic.

Who was it who would wear onyl Chanel No.5 to bed? Monroe? CN5 smells like damp flannels to me though, horrid stuff..... :-(

Tom

I would endure its damp flannel smell for someone Monroe-esque :yesnod:

Might sound weird, but I actually don't mind CN5 anyway.

And come to think of it, I wonder how men's Cool Water would work on a lady . . .
