Chan Eil Whiskers
Fumbling about.
Monday's shave was plenty good.
I spent last night in a hotel, but got a decent picture of my gear anyway which is gratifying.
Vi-John, brand new blade. The Tube. My only and favorite synthetic brush which is a very good brush in my opinion. The mild baseplated M3teorite worked a treat. Mysterium Serum was used after my shave.
Kim, I think it's somewhat of an apples and oranges comparison. Both knots are great in my opinion, but they are not similar enough to compare very well.
To me, the Kirin face feel is unusual. I don't know what knots to compare it with. Perhaps the Simpson Super Badger but I've not used the Simpson Super Badger. It has qualities in common with the Vulflix Super Badger, and otherwise the same as Simpson Super Badger, but the Vulflix knot is quite lacking in density and backbone whereas the Kirin is lacking in nothing.
I don't think the Kirin is as soft as the SV knots but it's soft enough for me to like it. It has some presence which somebody might find bothersome, but I like it. It's very hard for me to put my finger on exactly why I like it so much and harder to compare it.
I compared the Kirin with both of my rather dissimilar from one another Chubbies in Best Badger. The Kirin is not like either. It's also not really like any of my Manchurians. It's an unusual knot in my experience.
My only Kirin is ⇡this⇡ one. The knot is 27 mm. I'd say it's a very large 27 mm knot. Mostly I notice how huge it is when I'm washing it after using it. I'm not saying it is too big for my face lathering, not at all, but it is very big. Mine is a fan whereas all of my SV knots, and all SV knots to my knowledge, are bulbs which makes a difference, too, I'd think.
I'm very pleased with the Kirin in 27 mm fan. I've ordered a second Kirin, also in the fan shape. My second Kirin will be 25 mm. I probably would have ordered it in 23 mm except they were entirely sold out and unavailable. I think the 25 mm will be pretty darn big, too.
I considered going for the 29 mm Kirin, and think I would have liked it, too, but I came to my senses.
Don't get me wrong here. I love my SV brushes and I love my Mozingos. I have a lot of really great brushes. The Kirin is, in a sense, one of many, but it's also its own thing.
I'm not sure any of that helps at all, but it's all I got.
Really, I think any size Kirin will be great. I don't know how the Kirin would be in the bulb shape.
Oh, I got mine (both of them) in the default loft. Someone advised me to order it a little higher, and I might have done so except I'd already ordered and it was too late to change the loft. That said, I'm glad I got the default loft; it seems perfect to me.
Happy shaves,
Jim

Jim,
I was wondering if you could try to compare the Kirin with the SV brushes we both love.... I'm thinking about one, but I can't quite grasp what the face feel is... Any help you could provide would be awesome....

If I do go that route, I'll have Rudy make me a similar handle to the one he just turned for me... Probably with rich purple or deep blue bands, top and bottom... I was thinking 29mm..... but maybe 27 would be better.... Again, your comments would be appreciated.
