What's new

Considering a switch…

I’ll be joining you at 73, end of April. Going to the gym soon after I type this. So far so good.
Thanks for the words. I’m thinking of checking out the shavette route. Got so many new blades, now. Break some in two and alternate between the straight edge and double edge.
Wow, going to the gym great for you, I always thought about trying that

That’s very interesting and good to know. Thank you. Great to know.

Just to let you know that when you snap blades in half, there will be a little bit of curling at the breaking point. Some shavettes account for that in their build others do not.

The only 1/2 DE shavette I own is the Parker SR1. The “paddles” that clamp down on the blade are slightly concave making room for the aforementioned blade curl. The result is that the blade edge is completely clamped down its entire length. I would assume other Parker models are made in a similar way. I purchased mine years ago for about $20 I believe. I consider it a good buy.

Other shavettes on the market seem to assume the user will buy pre-cut 1/2 DE blades that are perfectly flat. Placing a user-snapped blade with curls result in the blade not being held as securely.

Just letting you know.

Hello all. This is a little long but I’ve got a moment and hope you do, too.

After years of cartridge razor use, I got into the double edge world a few years ago.

I’m really enjoying it. Got four razors with different feels and I like to switch between blades using this handy device:

I was recently running out of blades and made the decision to only buy ones in cardboard packaging. Too much plastic circulating. I understand the importance of the material in today’s world…but am into limiting my consumption whenever possible. Do my small part.

I posted a question on another forum for blade suggestions, with that cardboard element as a limitation. And now I’ve got 350 very effective blades to use up in the coming years. 🥳

BUT:

Someone mentioned that, if I’m environmentally conscious, I might want to consider buying products that are manufactured and shipped as close to home (NYC) as possible. Less shipping. Support US and local economies, too. Good stuff.

Which led me to thinking about the straight edged razor. Seems to me that the advantages are pretty apparent, in terms of environmental impact. And, from what I understand, they give a closer shave.

So I’m visiting this forum for the first time. I learned a ton about double edge razors here, on other forums. I know next to nothing about straight edges. Looking for some insights.

Links to good videos about the different types of razors, strops, etc. And videos about the technique. I’m sure there’s a learning curve.

I do have a lotta double edge blades to go through from my recent buys…but am interested in laying the groundwork for a move into this world.

Thanks in advance. Have a good one.
To learn a lot of great foundational & advanced knowledge alike about straights, honing, stones, straight shaving technique, razors, etc. check out, “The Cajun Blade” channel on YouTube. Eric’s awesome & lots of good stuff there!

I have been looking into straight razor shaving as well. Not ready to make the jump.

In my research, however, I became concerned that the idea of starting with a shavette or AC type was not comparable to a real straight. The suggestion was that they are harder to use and much harsher on the skin. I came away feeling that they would not be the right choice. But you may feel differently.

My only recommendation is to research this a bit before assuming that these would be a step towards straight shaving.

I got one I'll sell ya...

Oh wait., never mind

That was my first reaction actually.

Now I'm imagining a Switch game where you have to shave using a straight. I'm not sure whether or not I should reflect too much on the fact I'd actually be interested in playing such a game, and immediately started thinking of all the options you'd have with different characters you could choose, and parts of the body to shave, and razors, stones, and strops....

I actually ended up buying a Dubl Duck from one of our esteemed members. Beautiful blade and extremely well cared for. Talked some football, too. Good stuff. Haven’t started up on it yet, though. It’ll happen, eventually.

Fine choice for a first razor...

I will add to all who are on the edge of SR shaving but holding themselves back... make a plan and do it! I looked into SRs nearly 20 years ago, and I thought it top expensive and chickened out. I finally did get pushed into it (thankfully!) 5 years ago. Now I wish I would have started 20 years ago!

Sure, it's a learning curve. But for me it was a fun one. I like learning new skills. I've been at it just long enough that honing has turned into a bit of a chore, but it's not bad. As long as I'm not restoring a mystery edge, but just touching up a razor, I can hone one up in a half hour or less. Have a few razors in rotation (by a few I mean more than 2 dozen). I can spend one weekend touching up razors and not touch a hone again for a couple years.
