Clubman Vanilla- tell me I did the right thing

Clubman Vanilla is a nice Spring/Summer light scent without a whole lot of staying power.

If Special Reserve is the cigar chomping, jocular old gent in the slightly tatty leather chair at the Clubman family reunion, Vanilla is the pleasant but unassuming cousin wearing a pastel sports coat who doesn't stick around too long.

Perfect analogy

Unfortunately I have to part company with the majority here. It's too heavy for my liking. I like regular Clubman, but this was just too artificial or chemical for me. I wore it three times before I traded it. I just couldn't do it. It's difficult to describe the scent, but vanilla is not a word I'd use to describe it.

It's difficult to describe the scent, but vanilla is not a word I'd use to describe it.

While I agree with the latter sentiment, I am inclined to disagree with the former. I didn't detect any vanilla fragrance at all, not even the tiniest little bit. To me, this frag was olde-worlde floral with citrus highlights.

While I think the "Classic Vanilla" is a bit of a cruel joke of a name, since I was really looking forward to a smooth tobacco-like vanilla, I still really enjoy the fragrance of it. SWMBO doesn't like it, but I love it.

If we were on the bridge of the Enterprise, I'd consider Vanilla to be the #2 man to the Classic Clubman, which is of course, the captain of the ship.

Regular Clubman is appropriate for almost all occasions. But sometimes I might wear the Classic 1-2 days in a row, and I'm stuck because I want more Clubman, but I need a change. Enter Vanilla. As others have mentioned, the Vanilla has lighter, sweeter notes. Even so, when I through it on, I still know I'm applying a classic feeling and smelling after shave. I know its a Clubman.

I also tend to reach for the Vanilla when I know I will be in close proximity to work colleagues - if I'm attending a luncheon, where its likely I'll be leaning over to talk to them. Or maybe if we need to travel in the car somewhere in the morning. For me, Vanilla really shines in these situations. Its a little more subtle, doesn't seem to last as long, but still gives me that classic feeling freshness that Clubman does so well.

Vanilla may refer to the color rather than smell. Regardless it's a wonderful aftershave and one of my favorites.

I haven't heard this explanation before, but I really like it.

I'm with NewTyme, Vanilla is like Clubman Classic Lite! If I'm concerned with being too close to others right after shaving I'll use Vanilla. It still has the same vibe as Clubman Classic (to me). I just ordered another bottle today!

The Clubman Vanilla doesn't have too much character in my opinion. I've got a bunch from the Clubman line, but the Lilac Vegetal and the Vanilla seem to be the bottles that are the most full.

In order of preference:

1) Clubman Special Reserve (my goto AS)
2) Pinaud Clubman Original
3) Clubman Musk (I use this around the house... just a very nice smell)
4) Virgin Island Bay Rum
5) Clubman Vanilla
6) Lilac Vegatal

They call it "vanilla" because it has coumarin, which can smell like anything from "fresh cut grass" to vanilla depending on how you tweak it. To me, this whole debate reminds me of the whole "Proraso Red doesn't smell like sandalwood!" thing....um, yes it does. You just have to get used to detecting certain scents that work as components.

And just because something has a weird name doesn't mean it's "synthetic" or "chemical." Beware of the dreaded dihydrogen monoxide!

I don't think it smells ANYTHING at all like the original Clubman, and I actually think it smells like vanilla a little bit.

Have it and like it. As many point out, vanilla is one among many notes, not clearly the strongest until about 10-15 minutes after you put it on, when it finally emerges as the key note, although as Kevan points out, it's a coumarin vanilla, not a classic vanilla. It's in my rotation, and, as you point out, for $6, unless you dislike it, how can you go wrong? And, at that price, I don't think twice about using it liberally: a splash into my lather when shaving to enjoy the aroma then, and a splash into my scentless aftershave balm, so the aroma lasts throughout the day. Then a splash in the hands smoothed on my neck. I may reek of it for my commute, which is fun, but within an hour it's down to a quiet background purr for the day.

I tried Clubman Classic Vanilla for the first time a couple of days ago and just used it again today. Now I am sure it is my favorite AS. It finally knocked Speick AS out of first place.

Most of the Pinaud aftershaves are top shelf and the Vanilla is right up there!!!

Arko product of the week shave from a few days ago.... Love the Vanilla!!!

Right now Vanilla and Lime Sec are tied for my favorite Clubman splashes. I pick up some vanilla in the scent myself.
