Broke my Merkur HD - What's next?

I have to give Jim a BIG +1 on Derby maybe not being a good choice for most tough beards. It mite be whats best for you, BUT you owe it to yourself to at least try a 7 o'clock yellow!!!

Haha, you guys are killing me but I appreciate the enthusiasm about the razors. Unfortunately, I'm not looking to start a collection or become obsessed with them. Put lightly, I hate shaving. The best, smoothest shave I ever had was with a Panasonic electric, but I paid the price the next day with irritation. I started with the DE shaving a few years ago. It's a lousy shave for me, but at least I don't have massive irritation with it. I still have to wait 2-3 days before shaving again so that gives me 1 or 2 days per week that I don't look like a cave man haha. There's not a day that goes by that I wish I had NO beard, body hair...

I'm not faulting you guys for your passion about shaving. I think this is the most passionate internet forum I belong to actually. I just don't enjoy it.

I'm more or less with you on the issue of shaving vs collecting. Never had any acquisition disorders, tried a bunch of different setups only to find what works and now stick pretty exclusively to those specific products. I have one backup of everything and that's it:w00t:

OTOH, once you start getting smooth, clean, irritationfree shaves you'll start to look forward to shaving again. And even more, when you make a small mistake -say at noon you discover a rough patch under your chin- pretty soon you'll be waiting for the morning to roll around so that you can try again and hopefully do better.

Yeah, chin is the worsssssssst; now I know why so many guys have goatees (not that I want one) Where do I buy all these different special blades? I was able to find the Derby in big quantity so that's what I got. I did try the ones in the grocery store which stunk, and I tried the Feathers which are too sharp. Who makes a "7 o'clock yellow" ?

By the way, those red tip super speeds are hard to find, so many bids on the ones on ebay. I have one guy that wrote to me on my ad in the WTB section, he wants $30 for his so we'll see...

The lady at ClassicShaving.com recommended a Merkur Futur because of the adjustability of the razor. She said I can dial it in to just the right amount for my beard. Should I go for one of those?

I don't get it, haven't you broken enough?

 I need to buy a new razor, trying to figure out a good one. Adjustable seems like a good idea just based on common sense..

You could go with that or with a Merkur Progress

*************or***************

pick up a Gillette slim adjustable or fatboy from the B/S/T forum.

While the Gillettes won't come with a warrantee, you can buy a couple of them (one and a spare) and still be dollars ahead. They're quality products.

I don't have much luck on that forum, by the time I see something there's already a bunch of replies.

Let's see if I understand this, the Merkur snapped off, so some advise the poor guy to get another Merkur? It has been said that the definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over & expecting a different result.

Get a Gillette adjustable, Red Tip, a New .. or has anybody snapped handles on any of those?

I'm looking right now on eBay for the Gillette Slim Adjustable.. I don't think the red tip one is adjustable from what I read....

Well the fat boy arrived today and so I tried my first shave with it. I set it to 1 and it was alright but seriously, I don't see what all the big hoopla about the fat boy is.. I think I like the Merkur I had better, but perhaps too soon to tell.. Does anyone know how much the blade moves per setting increment? How tight should I close the blade in?

It should move .002 - .003" per increment. You crank it down as tight as you can. There should be a quarter turn of lock-down at the end of the cinch-down. Be sure to loosen the blade while you're changing settings, then clamp it down again.

Couple months update on the Fatboy; I really don't like it. If I adjust it above anything beyond the first setting, it's too aggressive, not to mention that it doesn't even cut all the hairs. I'll do a pass and see a line of beard that it somehow completely missed which is really annoying. I just posted it in the For Sale forum..... I don't know if I should go back to the Merkur HD or try something else...

Is there a razor that is recommended for someone who hates the Fatboy adjustable? I don't have this razor acquisition syndrome thing like some of you guys; I truly HATE shaving, but it's something I have to do so I just want to get it done as clean and as fast as possible....

The advice you're going to get here is far and away from fast and get it over with.
Most of us here started off on this journey absolutely hating shaving as a tedious dreadful daily necessity.
For almost all of us, it has become a much looked forward to daily manly ritual. A time for ourselves to enjoy the smells and the quality of good equipment, good products and the proper application of hard earned technique.
I would not suggest an adjustable razor for you.
Look into a vintage Gillette Superspeed, a 40's style is quite a good shaver.
The adjustables work, but often can be an added bit of confusion for someone starting out. Particularly if you had one that didn't adjust properly, and that is what it sounds like.
Good Luck, I hope you find what you seek.

I know I know.. I don't have enough time in the day as it is to shave. For me, it's just another thing to do. Aside from that, I started re-looking at the Merkur razors and I'm having some trouble figuring out which one I had. I know it was the Merkur HD, and it was open comb.. But what do the 11C, 33C, 34C designations mean?

The 33C is a slimmer handle. The 34C is the short heavy handle. Both of these are not open comb.
The 11C is open comb with a heavy handle.

You control your day. Set your alarm clock 10 minutes earlier or shave at night before bed.
