Blade Sharpness Research Project

This is the Filoso Barber Brand blade, which is a private label blade of unknown origin. It is a thin blade of poor quality. My best guess is that it is Chinese, because of the unusual and opaque packaging. The tuck has two symmetrical slots for the tabs on the folding hangers, and is shrink-wrapped. I couldn't find any that match it in my collection, but I didn't look too hard. It is a mystery I would be more interested in solving if this were a blade of good quality.

1000012304.jpg

You tell me if you have seen a blade of known origin in a tuck with two symmetrical slots like this. Also, it is sort of melted into the waxed paper for stability. There aren't dots, but the whole envelope was melted onto the steel. If we do find a match, it will probably be like this too.
1000012305.jpg

1000012306.jpg

It ihas a heavy sloppy coating, and a crude grind done with cheap abrasives of inconsistent scratch size. The scratches of the secondary bevel approach the apex in lots of places.
1000012308.jpg

This one is not really proper steel for a razor blade. It is either a bad alloy, a bad heat treatment, or both. The failure mode is lots of very large denting and large chipping. The combination of bad steel, thin steel, and a bad grind reminds me of durablade, but the tuck doesn't match. You can see how the edge tends to roll over where the secondary grind scratches compromise the edge, which is basically everywhere.
1000012309.jpg

1729562330433.png

The standard deviation is very high throughout the test. This is partially due to a large variance between the two edges, but also due to the very crude grind. Even though there is a big variance, the better edge was still very bad. I doubt there are any good batches of this blade floating around.

I am fortunate that TRC stocks this blade by the tuck, so I do not have 99 more of them, and I didn't spend $13 on them. Even the case price of $8.33/100 is far too much for an improper blade like this one. There are better blades available for half the price. This is a hard pass, and I can't think of anyone who should buy it.

This is the other Cloud Super Stainless version that is readily available to me from Western resellers, the B2004 blue and yellow tuck blade. While the Cloud Bruce Lee was a sharp blade, and the Cloud SS red was mild, this one is firmly in the middle as a moderate blade. Like the others, it is well ground from good steel and has good durability and consistency.

Instead of awesome artwork, we get lots and lots of text that obviously wasn't reviewed by a native English speaker between translation and printing.
1000012310.jpg

1000012312.jpg

1000012314.jpg

It is a fairly typical three stage grind and there is a heavy coating.
1000012315.jpg

The failure mode is large denting. I am surprised it looks so bad because it was still reasonably sharp at the end of the test.
1000012316.jpg

It is the same basic idea as the sharp Cloud Bruce Lee, and mild Cloud SS red, but this is more moderate.

At the street price of $10.99/100, this blade has very little to offer. It is a good blade, but not at the price point. If you want to try a Cloud blade, get the awesome sharp Bruce Lee one, or the inexpensive mild red one. If you want to try a moderate blade, you can probably find something cheaper and more interesting than this.

Ah yes, "upholstery, industrial." Funny, I think another seller used a different word to describe this blade.

1000012328.jpg

I tried the good one today, and can confirm, my subjective experience matches the measurements and the experience of others. It feels very sharp, and more comfortable than most DE blades of similar sharpness. The length of this type of blade seems well suited to a safety razor, though I think a shorter profile like an imjectort blade probably makes more sense. The GEM Junior is great. I wish Gillette had sourced the same clear lacquer for their gold washed razors. I am starting to wonder how a modern CNC GEM razor might be.

This is the Klasik+ Platinum Super SIlver blade, which comes from a South African company. I got it from TRC, which categorizes it as an Indian blade, but sometimes they just pick something as a placeholder in those categories. I compared it to some of my Indian blades and didn't find a good match. I am not sure if it is manufactured by the South African company, or if it is just their private label blade produced in India or another location. I wouldn't be surprised if it is produced in China, either. Based on this limited research and information, I am going to consider it South African.

It is quite mild in sharpness, and has good durability and consistency.

1000012332.jpg

1000012333.jpg

1000012334.jpg

It is a fairly typical grind, with a heavy coating, and a relatively obtuse overall bevel angle. There are some secondary grind scratches near the apex, but I didn't have any issues with rolling or substantial damages from weak spots during the test.

1000012335.jpg

It is highly reflective. I don't doubt that the metallic coating contains silver. The failure mode is typical small chipping. This is a very durable edge, due to a mild grind, standard thickness stock, and good steel.

It seems to be a good blade for those looking for something mild and durable. I prefer sharper blades than this one, but I think this one performs as it is designed, and is of decent overall quality.

You might like the Micromatic Clog-pruf, @helicopter. It's more modern than the 1912, but it's a solid brass classic TTO from the 1930s era. One of the best shaving GEMs. Very nicely made and reasonably priced, if you shop around.

The is the Cloud A77 blade from Shanghai Cloud Blade Manufacturing Company.

A77 blades are long and short double edged blades made for barber razors, hair sharpers, or something like that. They are popular for shavettes because the length suits a shavette better than a normal DE blade, and they share most of the other attributes of standard DE blades, including having two edges, being made from thin stock, being sharp, and being inexpensive. They probably have an advantage in durability since each millimeter of edge does less work per pass, but my testing procedure cutting strips of paper won't reflect this, as I use strips that match the length of the edge. These blades come in a few different heights that are used in different razor designs, or are used to offer different exposure.

This one is 16.86mm tall, which should make it a standard 1.7cm A77 blade. It came bundled with a shavette I bought to test this type of blade, and we start A77 testing with it, as it seems to be the dominant blade in the market, at least for Western users shopping on Ali Express.

It is a well-made blade, and I can see why it is popular. It is sharp, with good durability and consistency. While not as sharp as the Cloud Bruce Lee, I bet subjectively it feels a lot sharper in a shavette than the Bruce Lee ever will in a safety razor.

1000012339.jpg

It is just a long and short DE blade with a different hole pattern. You can even snap them for certain razors. This one is a standard 100 micron stock, and it is made of 6Cr13 steel.

1000012340.jpg

The grind is done well, with good abrasives, good design, and clean straight transitions. The coating is moderately thick and even.

1000012343.jpg

The failure mode is a combination of large chipping and denting, but measurements indicate it held up pretty well through the first three cut tests. I think with the long edges, it should be durable in practice. This is another one that looks worse than the measurements indicate it should.
1000012346.jpg

It is quite sharp. Looks like the metallic coating is your typical platinum one. The Chinese writing says something about nanotech and gold, gold being one of the root words (sort of) for platinum in Chinese.

I see this blade available at $6.77/100 with Choice shipping. If you are using 1.7cm A77 blades, you are crazy if you haven't tried this one. It is a good blade at a bargain price. Even if it doesn't suit you, you will only be out a few dollars. I will be testing some more of these, so you might want to hold off for a couple weeks before you order boxes of them, though.

@BigAlVista sent me this German Edgewell Wilkinson Sword blade to test. I think this one is for European markets because it seems like the American market ones are usually marked as "Classic" to contrast with the Schick brand they use in the American market for modern cartridges. This is the one that comes in a box of 20 normal sized tucks of five blades each, versus the larger tucks of 5 or 10 that are sold in blister hangers.

This one had a bit more coating impact than we normally see, but I doubt it is made to a different specification. If they were going to change something, it probably would be the coating, though.

Sharpness is very close to some of the others, and it is quite sharp overall.

Even on the big chart, it is clustered with three other blades of the same specification. It is safe to say that while some have been sharper and some more mild, this one is a good representation of the blade specification.

Thanks for testing!

This is the Jiangxi Xirui Rhinoceros XR red short A77 blade. When I loaded it up, I realized it has similar exposure to the tall one; the difference is that both edges use the same set of alignment holes, so it can't be split. The distance from the alignment holes to the edge is independent of this and is what determines the exposure. I think there might be some razors that require a short blade or a half blade, but mounting it in my razor that can hold a full tall blade isn't an issue. This one is 10.31mm tall. Since they should all have similar exposure, I may just refer to them all as short (or 1.0) and tall (or 1.7 or standard) from now on. This one is a thin blade. It measured 91-93 microns thick, but there aren't any big flats to get an ideal reading, so I think it is standard 90 micron thin stock with some distortion around the stamped holes.

This is an excellent sharp blade. For a thin blade, it is very durable and consistent. As I mentioned previously, my testing procedure doesn't reflect the fact that these blades should see less wear than blades with shorter edges since each millimeter of edge needs to do less work per pass and per shave. The paper cuts push the entire edge through stacked sheets of paper, so the longer edge is doing a proportional (to its length) amount of work. In practice, it should be very durable and consistent.

This one drops the words "Swiss Rhinoceros," but retains a picture of a rhinoceros. I wonder if they had some issue with Proctor and Gamble, which owns a Chinese legacy Shanghai Gillette "Rhino" brand. Jiangxi Xirui is a Chinese company; they also make the Matgicol double edged blades.

1000012373.jpg

The wrapper still says "Rhinoceros Swiss."
1000012374.jpg

1000012377.jpg

The red Rhinoceros Swiss XR double edged blade had a different grind with a much taller secondary bevel. The metallic coating is even and moderately thick. They used consistent abrasives for the primary grind. The secondary and tertiary grinds are polished too smooth to say much about scratches, which is a good thing. They should feel smooth.

1000012376.jpg

After the test, there is some fine chipping, and a few medium chips. This is very good steel, in excellent condition, especially considering this is a thin 91 micron (probably 90 micron stock) blade.
1000012382.jpg

The curve indicates it probably has a platinum metallic coating. It was slightly sharper than the Cloud Bruce Lee, with excellent consistency and durability for a thin blade.

This is the real coated stainless Personna GEM-62-1078 blade. As you guys have been saying, it is excellent. It is sharp, durable, and consistent, like it is supposed to be. While I have only tried the other one, I have no doubt this one should shave well.

It is stamped "STAINLESS" but Razor Emporium incorrectly labeled this and the other one.

View attachment 1931238

Looks great. This one is a shaver for sure. It is ground with fine and consistent high-quality abrasives, it has a straight polished edge, and it has visible metallic and PTFE coatings. The bevel of this one is much more reflective than the other, not that we would doubt the "STAINLESS" stamp on the spine.

View attachment 1931239

After the test, there is a tiny bit of very fine chipping at the apex. This blade is still ready to shave, but I am putting it in the library and I will try a fresh one.

I'm glad you found the Gem Personna SS PTFE blade to test.
For some reason folks think the carbon blades are smoother and my conclusion carbon blades are no match to the Stainless steel high carbon magnetic alloyed coated blades. I have well over 600 shaves using the Gem Personna SS PTFE blades and they are better than a lot of AC blades for longevity and sharpness.
Any blade that gives 10 decent shaves per blade is a winner and has to be very sharp to get to that level and the Gem Stainless coated blades are very sharp as your chart shows and I confirm your report. I'm glade you made a index for us to find our blades to compare to others.
Thanks for making it interesting for us blade connoisseurs!
