Best rhythm section

I have it on good authority that the Purple Gang was an incredible rhythm section, prior to and during their incarceration

Have been listening to "Tommy" recently, and found myself focusing on the drums. I must second the gentleman who nominated Entwistle/Moon.

A great jazz/fusion rhythm (overall) line up is Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Herbie Hancock, and Pat Metheney. They have a way of expressing rhythm individually and together like it's nobody's business. The Japan jazz festival stuff on YouTube is worthy of note.

Someone also mentioned Medeski, Martin and Woods...I totally concur. Seen them live many times, and they have a righteous and infectious groove.

For something that's more "in your face", try Liquid Tension Experiment's "Paradigm Shift"...top quality tunes done during an improv recording session by master musicians.

And for the coupe de grace, I suggest a listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTfOB_TBBew to hear the lords of rhythm lay it down old skool.

B&B's Emperor of Emojis

i don't know if the wrecking crew count as a "band", but if they do, i have to say hal, kaye and the rest of the wrecking crew were top notch

I am down with most of the nominations in this thread. Some absolutely great mentions but no Allman Brothers Band? They were/are a groove machine. Throw in the related Gov't Mule (Woody-era) and Derek Trucks Band, too. Also, Geezer and Ward from Sabbath were ferocious. And for those SST kids out there, Watt and Hurley ripped stuff up but were still rock solid. RIP D. Boon.

ABB just about any incarnation especially w/B. Oakley & Woody... Mule w/Woody and Matt Abts.. & Little Feat w/ Richie Hayward and Kenny Gradney would be my #1 pick though..Feats Don't Fail Me Now!!!

Hard to go wrong with Little Feat. Another band from that era: Sea Level. Kind of a cross between ABB and Steely Dan.

For some really good rhythms, check out some of that 70's Euro jazz funk:

Lots of great treasures to be found in library/production music houses from the 70's as well! KPM, De Wolfe, Bruton, etc. etc.

I'm a little late to this thread, but it's hard to beat Geddy Lee and Neil Peart.

I'm a fan of Billy Cobham and Rick Laird too.

There's a ton of great rhythm sections out there though.
