What's new

Bay Rum

I may sound dumb, but here goes...
Can anyone suggest a BR that has an old time barbershop smell? I don't want anything that is specially scented. I just want one that is like a classic BR. (If they all have the same scent, forgive my ignorance. I am new to BRs and wanted to try one that would smell just as it would if I were shaving a hundred years ago.)
Many thanks!

"Old time barbershop" scent is very subjective. That said, The last truly old-school, old-time barber shops that I have been in that had bay rum on hand used Masters BR and Stephans BR. Masters is just alcohol and bay leaf extract, so no spice or clove. It's been awhile since I had Stephans but I reacll it to be a fairly straight forward BR. Pinaud VIBR seems heavy on the spice and especially clove for me. Hope this helps.

Barbers are notoriously frugal so you need to consider some of the mass market products sold by the gallon for $10.00. That is what a barber would have used. They are one note products rather than the complex scents of a boutique item.

ay to what the captain says..............i've used nothing but ogallala for about 4 years. i've tried them all and i love them all especially extra strength sage and cedar.............but i'm curious with what the captain sells and will buy myself some for my birthday coming up soon

Thank you very much for your help!!

I've only tried Layrite No. 9 but my barber received a bunch of stuff from Suavacito Pomade yesterday in the mail. Among the items was a bottle of bay rum. Smelled pretty good and packaged similar to Layrite.
