Astra Superior Platinum

Astra SP always gets such high praise in the forums. I keep trying them in different razors and it always comes out the same for me -- I don't like them at all. I've never tried the Indian Astras but I have Russian Astra from three different years and all of them are disappointing - at least they are consistent. I find this very confusing/surprising since so many glowing reviews and also Helicopter's sharpness tests rank them as much sharper than many blades that I do like - blades that will slice right thru my coarse whiskers with ease while Astra SP struggle to cut my whiskers.

I think you just said the magic words yourself: MY COARSE WHISKERS.

Now, saying ones whiskers are of the coarse quality, is a subjective statement. I say this because, outside of the hair quality itself, so many other variables play into this subjective feeling: general condition of the skin pre-shave treatments, brushing etc. But, coming from shavers that define themselves as coarse-haired, Astra SP seems to not entirely capture their hearts and minds.

I like them and I would define my hair as coarse. But, I also want to point out that it has much to do with them being sharp ENOUGH for MY whiskers. By subjective feeling, they are not sharpest tool in the industry, but they cut my hair efficiently ENOUGH for the process to be pleasurable.

And, while not getting into the hardware side of this debate 😆, I only add this: it is the COMBINATION of variables, not the INDIVIDUAL variable that counts. The quest for it is a journey without a definitive finish line. And that's why we live happily in our own rabbit holes 🙏

Astra SP MiI were the first blades I ever used, and I taught myself to shave with them in the shower. Since I started with shaving cream and a mirror I've noticed that they tend to tug a lot when I don't do any preshave prep. They're still serviceable, but I've begun to favor blades that are a bit sharper.

I was stuck with a 50 pack for about 11 months by default. Couldn’t go home for more then a 5-8 hours spread out over a month. The COVID scare time…
They were pretty good. My first time trying them out. I still got 50 at home in storage. I didn’t mind them. Sharp and smooth. But now I prefer BIC Chromium and Astors. YMMV

I lean towards perma sharp and nacets more often but I think it depends on the razor. I am going to give the astra sp another whirl in my henson ti22 mild....from what I remember they always give me weepers but my I am going to see how they work again. never tried the russian ones so i have nothing to compare it to but other gillette blades from russia.

It has been written in this and also other forums that the Indian Astra SP blade could be the same as the Gillette 7'oclock Sp in black boxes, equally produced in Gillette factories in India.

My 7 O' Clock SP are quite old, maybe 2017 or 2018 and I don't know if they changed the specs in later years. What I can say my black Ninjas are not the same as Indian Astra SP. 7 O' Clock SP are exceptional, Astra SP work fine.

That price jump though.....Like where are they made and why cant I find 100 for less than 30 bucks?

I think they are just positioned as a premium blade and so the price follows. They come in a nice metal tin if you buy a complete, unaltered package. Sometimes the seller removes the tucks from the tin and presumably keeps it for other usages - I recently bought 30 or 40 off Amazon as I didn't need a 100 - the tin was not sent.

The price change happened only a few years ago. You'll come across posts from members lamenting the increase.

These are made in India. You can buy the 7 o'clock Permasharp Stainless, also Indian-made, for good prices on eBay. Not these Super Platinums, though.

I tried the 7 oclock sharp edge yellows and they work they just have lots of blade feel. I did get the super platinums in a pack of 10 to try out for 4 dollars. But we shall see if I ever buy more than that. I hear the green pack is good too

Having tried both the Russian and Indian versions, I don't notice a difference really. I know other people report that the Indian versions are sharper and the Russian smoother. For me though, any perceptible difference is drowned out by other variables in play like safety razor used and mental state.

I just got a few packs in from Amazon and they are Russian-made. I guess there's still plenty of Russian stock if people want to stock up.
