What's new

Any knitters here at B&B?

I don't knit or crochet. That's The Wife's hobby. She makes baby stuff for incoming nieces and nephews.

But, I saw this (image) and then happened to see this thread and thought you guys might get a kick out of it.

I don't knit or crochet, although I kinda wish I knew how to. I do know how to sew, although most of what I do is repairs, sewing on buttons, etc. I could definitely make things, I just haven't really done that since mandatory sewing class in middle school.

Well, alright, that's not entirely true. I have made some footbags AKA: "hacky sacks," but that's it, really.

When I first started making them, I used old beat up BDUs for the fabric because it's pretty durable, but eventually I started purchasing small amounts of suede from Wal Mart.

I did not make the grey one with metal studs, the two german flag crocheted ones, the one that says "mirage" on it, or the one right below that. And then in the 2nd picture, I didn't make the one that's just red and yellow, but I made all the rest of them, various different sizes, fabrics, geometric patterns, filler materials, etc. The fewer the panels, the less round the footbag will be, and also generally the more floppy it will be as well. All those little seams on a 32 panel soccer ball style bag will help give it some rigidity. I can probably churn out 3, 4, maybe 5 of the simpler ones in a day EASILY from start to finish, but the soccer balls take at least a couple days, unless I just sit and do nothing but sew most of the day. I'm not brave enough to try some of the crazy complex patterns some people make. I've seen some that were 120 panels or more, and that's just insanity. 32's enough for me, especially when these are all being sewn by hand, with a needle and thread.

I haven't done ANY sewing in a while, but I have a soccer ball one that's like half finished from a good five years ago sitting around in an altoids tin somewhere in this house.

Oh and by the way, kicking a footbag around just trying to keep the thing from hitting the ground can be some REALLY good cardio. I lost like 40 pounds one summer doing absolutely nothing different with diet/exercise EXCEPT kicking the bag around for at least half an hour every day. I should probably start doing that again, cuz I'm gaining too much weight.

Testimonial:

My wife started knitting over the Christmas Holidays and has been doing excellent with it. After seeing her take it on and after following this thread, I felt compelled to try it out myself. On Saturday, my wife and I went to our local "mom and pop" knitting supplies store and picked me up some needles and yarn to make a scarf. I learned how to cast on and knit fairly quick and now have a 25 stitch scarf knitted to about the same length as it is in width. Very therapeutic stuff. I find it also takes adds a bit of productivity to when I retire to the couch for the evening. So, thanks for playing a part in the persuasion, gentlemen.

Question: I want to make my own 9mm (13US) needles. If I want to make square needles, and forgive me if this sounds super newb-ish, would I cut them square so that they are 9mm on the diagonal?

Bump.

I have knitted up a couple of sweaters since I last checked in here, and some bacon.

The current fun thing is hot water bottle covers. I finished one for the wife, and it is awesome. My daughter picked out some lovely merino/mohair blend from my wife’s vast supply of yarn, so that what’s on the go now.

Anyone else got something in the works?
