Aftershave Pass Box

Gents, I received the box back, so the pass has gone full circle and is now complete. I told Don, I'd send him some samples and send them his way, since he had to bow out of the pass. There's a couple adds, and a couple samples in there for me to try so I'll post some impressions of those in the next few days.

I did try the Thayers Witch Hazel. The aloe in it felt good, But I really didn't like the strong alcohol smell that came from it. Smelled like I splashed everclear on my face. Had a faint aroma at the tail end, that I thought was rose, but after looking at the ingredient list, I believe it was grapefruit. I'll try it a couple more times, but not terribly excited about this one. I'll stick with regular WH.

Do you plan on Doing a second round at some point?

I'd like to. But there wasn't much interest in this one.
I did enjoy participating and appreciate the work you put into it. Thank you, TheVez2.

However, I still have a lot of sample left that I'm working through. I've come to realize that I need to use more splash, had been holding my palm snugly against the opening and turning it upside down a couple of times and that was it. I've started to not hold my palm as tightly to the opening and getting more splash. I think I started to do this with the Pacific Rush and finally started to get the menthol feel that others were talking about.

I had to force myself to start using more as my vials were cracking. I think it was the pressure from the grief I was getting for saying I used so little.

I like transfering my AS into sample size spray pump bottles. I use 4-5 pumps. If I use the bottle to pour into my hands I tend to be very heavy handed.

Well you can put me on the early list. I may be able to get a couple friends to try it as well.

Oh noes! I guess I'll have to check my vials, too!! :w00t:

And I'm still learning stuff. I just read dangerousdon reply to SamariJack about Bootlegger's and clicked the link to go to the Wiki. WOW!!! There's a great collection of recipes mixing AS to get a awesome result.

That's a good idea. I'm still old-fashion and like the hand method, but I'm always open to trying new things.

I'd love to be in on a second pass if it happens. I've been following along here, but didn't find the thread until after it had already started. Either way though, thanks to everyone who has participated and organized. I've enjoyed reading it.

I cup my hand, and put as much aftershave as I can into it. Usually about 2-3 ml per application.
Wow, that puts things in perspective. I am definitely a lightweight, I'm sure I don't even use 1 ml per splash. This also would explain why some of the AS fades very quickly for me and I don't get the full experience. I need to up the amount I use.

It's not called an aftershave splash for nothing! You need to splash it on your face, lol.

If you want the alcohol to tone and tighten your skin, then you need to get enough on your face so there's a layer of alcohol everywhere that will evaporate. Your not just applying a small dab of scent and then rubbing it around. At least, that's how I look at it.

I was very excited to try a sample of Fine American Blend that was put in the box for me. I don't have many Artisan Aftershaves and this one seems to have an almost universal acceptance. But, I did not like it one bit. It offered nothing for my face in terms of conditioning. I was expecting something in terms of a Barbershop scent (and I know that's a subjective description to begin with), but all I smelled was a cheap cologne kind of scent. Very disappointed with this.

Aqua Brava on the other hand was fantastic. A very rustic, earthy, masculine scent that is right up my alley. I will be buying this as soon as I can find it. My one complaint is that it is just a tad too strong. This is saying a lot coming from me. So I might water it down a little with some witch hazel and see how that goes next time. I think there was just enough left in this bottle for 2-3 uses. Thanks for adding this!

I'm not sure what a barbershop scent is but Fine AB didn't remind me of any barbershop I'd been in. I agree it was kind of a cologne type scent but I tend to like that and it was a little spicy instead of just sweet.

I didn't get to try the Agua brava, did any vials of Swashbuckler make it to you Vez? After Clydes description I'm wondering if those plastic vials didn't foul up the scent some. I really enjoy it from the frosted glass bottle it came in. Some of the splashes did change some in those vials.

"Inspired by classic barbershop scents..." -West Coast Shave
"A barbershop in a bottle" -Maggard Razors
"...and evoke an unmistakable "barbershop" quality" -Fine

Definitely not what I got from it!

Yep, I'll be trying that one next!

In general I think the term barbershop scent is miss used, and used to frequently now due to the popularity of certain items the sold well. I'd much rather if they just described the notes that were used in making the smell.

Today's barbershop smell of nothing. I guess I can transport scent appreciation back in time and understand that barbers used to smell of something. But due to my age I really can even imagine why that scent would be.

I like the fine AB. But I'll say in general all the fine scents remind me of cologne fragrance. I didn't like it at first but they have grown on me. I think I'd prefer this to chemical smelling scents coming from all the AS at my pharmacy and are mass produced.

For me no AS smells like a barbershop, the only old school barbershop I've used smelled like Barbicide and hair tonic.

Glad you liked it! It's one of my favorites. A little goes a long way, so it makes sense to dilute it for use as an aftershave. I got my bottle from Amazon.
