What's new

A new find of a Gillette Slim in the oddest place.

So Monday I was out delivering a load of firewood to a friend. And I had stopped to get gas at a station. A truck came up loaded with scrap. And while pumping I looked over in the truck at the items and spotted a nasty bent up razor. It was totally covered in green corrosion. I spoke to the man and asked if I could look at the Gillette razor and he said sure. I got it out of the mass of old wire and broken window screen frames and saw that it was a Slim Adjustable. It was bent when looking at it from the front the left hand side of the blade tray was bent upwards about twenty to thirty degrees. The doors were jammed open and it looked like a lost cause. I almost tossed it back in the pile when the guy said I could have it if I wanted it. I thanked him and put it in my pocket.

after delivering the wood and getting home I got the razor out and immediately began soaking it in nearly boiling water with Dawn dish detergent. I fill a glass 3/4 full of hot tap water and then set that in the microwave oven for two minutes to get the water to almost boiling. I then put in the detergent and razor and let it soak for 30 minutes or so. After three bathes followed by heavy toothbrush scrubbing I saw that this razor was in much better condition than I thought.

Now I needed to see if I could unbend the head enough to make it work again. I used my thumbs pushing down on the high side and the other thumb pushing up on the low side. I went slowly bending just a little at a time and resting for a few minutes between each session. After about an hour I had the head back to pretty close to original.

The guards were pushed back against the adjuster base effectively closing the holes. I used a padded electricians screwdriver and a piece of flat angle to spread the guard back out. I noticed the plating was intact and so I again decided to go very slowly. I also decided to use some heat from a butane lighter to keep the metal hot. It was used lightly and I never got the guard hot enough to burn you if you touched it. Just hot enough that you didn't want to touch it for long.
So after six or seven small bends and being very careful I was able to get the guard back to almost perfect and the plating had remained intact.

By This point I was very excited with the results and I knew this junk pile razor had the potential to become a working razor again. So I now tried closing the doors with the TTO knob. And it worked fine until the doors were almost closed at which point they kind of stick. I look and see that the hinges are slightly bent inward on both sides. And I use pliers and an old leather belt to pad the jaws and tweek the hinges just a bit outward. And now the doors close but it's still too hard to close so I know something else is binding somewhere. I think the center rod is slightly bent. And I don't have the skills to totally disassemble a Slim so I am sending this one to Captian Murphy for the final fix.

in my excitement I forgot to take before pictures, stupid me, but I did take some Picts of the razor as I sent it to Captain Murphy. Hopefully he can fix the last issues and get the blade gap right again so that this Slim will shave again.
The blade gap is bad right now it's very wide on the left and almost touching the blade guard on the right. But overall the plating is pretty good on the razor. You can see for yourself and Captain Murphy will be posting his experiences with the razor when he gets it later this week hopefully.

I always like to see the razors that get brought bak from near death. I hope your "zombie" razor shaves well when all is said and done.

thanks, it's kind of fun and exciting to try and rehab these razors that would have become a pool of molten brass and lost forever. Perhaps I find pleasure in the weirdest things, at least that's what my wife thinks, but what does she know???

Nice job rescuing that one. Looking forward to reading more about this in Captain's thread.

Thank you, I too can't wait to see what the Captain can do to fix this one. And I can't wait to try it out. I have not been a big fan of adjustable razors but this one may change my mind if Captain Murphy can work his magic on it.

He should be able to square you away. Its amazing on what that man can do with some razors that look like they should just be trashed. If you haven't seen it yet, check out what he did with the "Katrina Razor".

Great story. Kudos to you for being so observant. You performed a resurrection, not a restoration! The Captain will really make that one sing. Congrats.

No apparent damage, still looks like it has most of its plating...BRILLIANT! This one will certainly be another "back from the dead" razor:thumbup: Now we know the fate some of these old razors face:a36:Keep your eyes peeled, Gents! I am excited to bring this one back!:spidey:

Ah yes! Cap will fix her up for you. As I was reading though I was hoping you would say, and here it is, cleaned up and back to working order. I couldn't help but think to myself, well he got it for free, looking pretty good so far, No..Dont give up yet, keep going with it. Maybe even try disassembling yourself, it sure would be a fun event, and a definite learning experience. Gotta say though it sure is a great find, and a wise decision in sending her off to Cap. In the end im sure Cap will have her looking good again and take about a good 30 years off its life and you'll have this Slim ready to go for another 30!

Well I did the best I could without disassembly and I just don't feel competent enough yet to attempt a Slim disassembly. So in my mind the only option was to send it to the real expert. It's not by any means right yet. It doesn't open and close correctly and the blade gap is aweful to say the least. The chances of this one being a good razor rest fully with Captain Murphy, and I believe he can do it. I'm not sure at all that I could do it. The most I have done is disassemble a few SS razors and they are nothing compaired to a Slim or Fatboy.

Plus us the bent parts are still somewhat bent and Captain has much more experience than I do with these. Now if it were a firearm I might have an advantage since my father was a gunsmith and I learned quite a bit from him about that subject. And while some of the skills are the same or similar they are in no way exactly the same.

and I don't now have a shop with a vice and other tools necessary to do this kind of work at present. So when faced with that issue I will always chose to go with the more experienced man and that is definitely Captain Murphy.

Caps made some darn nice videos on how to take these apart.....Anyhow same here, for me if it were a 4 cylinder turbo engine, give it to me all day long. I used to race a 1990 eagle talon for about 6 years and probably took apart that engine over 100 times. Did everything all myself to that car. But the slim is about the only adjustable I have some experience with. I remember the first I took one apart and the spring flew past my head like a rocket, took forever to find it. I would also have much more faith in Cap doing a razor of my own, but I am one of those guys that likes to take things apart to see how they work (which sometimes I learn the hard way not to do this) and tinker around with small projects. Well no dis respect meant and again sending it to Cap is always a wise decision.

from your description of how you found it, this looks amazing after the little bit of work you've put into it so far. don't give up!
