A New Convert To The Church of Cella

I don't think there is a debate. It clearly says "Crema Da Barbe" on the front- it's a cream.

MY Cella came in a huge brick with Santa Claus in the label. It is a soft soap since Cream is hard to keep outside a container.
one thing is for sure, it gives a close, smooth Italian shave

A huge brick of Cella? Oh my my my my. That might have to be my next purchase.

What would anyone do with a whole kilogram of Cella? That's about seven of those normal-sized tubs. One will last a year and Cella does have an expiration time of 12 months, probably a conservative notice on the tub.

The expiration dates are there so you throw the product away when it's "expired". Expiration dates are nothing but ways for companies to make money.

Cella is tallow based but doesn't contain any of the preservatives normally seen in a similar soaps (such as Tetrasodium EDTA - short for the delightful sounding ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid). As such after a year it is possible for a soap of this kind to go "off" (normally appearance will suffer first). This can either be the soap itself or rancidity developing in the residual unsaponified tallow which most manufacturers leave in to moisturise the skin (if no free-fats are left behind, the soap would be very harsh on the skin. Normally about 3% - 5% unsaponified fat remains).
If you get a kilo of Cella, probably the best solution avoid any problems is to pack a bowl with enough for your daily use, divide the remainder into bricks and wraping them well in layers of plastic, place them in the bottom of your freezer.

That story about expiration dates reminds me of Institut Karité's soap. In the box it bears the "best consume before" sign with 3 M (??!!) inside. Well, even if I'd use that soap every day, I don't think I would finish it in just three months!

Its tallow richness stay well in the freezer and just in case the anti tallow elements get their way, I'm stockpiling

Okay, thanks to ya'll's advice, I am slowly being converted! Used a brush with plenty of backbone, soaked the Cella and face lathered. Much, much better performance. In fact, it was right up there with my favorite lanolin based soaps & creams.

Well, the expiration date is there by law. It's original function was to let the store know when it had to rotate the stock.

As for the question at hand, I bought a kg of cella a year ago May and, at the rate I'm going, it's going to last me about two years. I keep in the bathroom and the product has not degraded. On the other hand, now that I'm trying lots of different soaps, I don't think I'll buy another kg.

Nice to hear. Remember to keep using on a continual rather than occasional basis.

Funny you should post that. I recently posted a little poem about Tabac ("I used Tabac today, oh boy; I have to say I was a lucky man...") and was thinking about writing a Cella poem. But letting my mind wander to come up with something that "Stella/Cella" thing was all I could come up with! Kind of a dead end.

So now yuu have reinforced that and I will never clear it out of my way!

I just got some of this recently....looks like it is kinda old and I am wondering if it is okay. It is still rather soft but has turned yellow/brown.

Okay to still use? I'd like to try it for the Wednesday SOTD.

Try scrubbing off the surface layer.

Not sure we can go by that. My tube of Omega "cream" and my jar of Omega "soap" both say "Sapone da Barba."

Maybe the lay-back Mediteranean (sp?) types don't get as worked up as some of us do over the whole cream v. soap issue.

How on God's green Earth do you get this stuff to work? I load the brush, add a little water to the bowl and the stuff explodes into thin, foamy lather. Doesn't matter how much or how little water I use. Makes MWF seem as easy to lather as Musgo Real. What is the secret?!?

Work the brush aggressively into the soap and then into your face. By the 2nd pass if you don't have copious lather (squeeze the brush and see the bounty) you must have really bad water or a bad puck. My experience is that this stuff is not picky at all. Too little water/too much water, doesn't matter. If you are convinced it is picky and dont like it, trade it for some P.160. It is in the same genre as Cella but even easier to lather.
