What's new

A different type of restraint for 2025

Some people enter the yearly restraint because they have metric tons of hardware and software and/or have 'acquisition disorders.' So maybe they want to shave their way through a large stash of software or use some of their neglected hardware.

But maybe others enter because they want to save money by not purchasing shaving items. If you are one of those people, perhaps the idea I am about to present will appeal to you.

The idea is not that you can't buy or acquire any shaving stuff, it's that you can't spend money doing so. Accordingly, you are allowed to enter PIFs, ask for shaving gifts for your birthday or holidays, and even to buy whatever shaving gear you want, provided you pay for the new gear with funds obtained by selling things you already own. What you sell doesn't necessarily have to be shaving gear, either. Sell anything you no longer want, and buy any shaving gear you want throughout the year.

You keep track of how much money you brought in, and how much you spent. If, at the end of the year, what you brought in minus what you spent is zero or greater, you have conquered the restraint! You shaved free for an entire year. Or, like I did in 2020, you earned money shaving (I think I came out slightly more than $200 ahead).

If this sounds like fun (and good for your wallet), we could start up a thread and get people to sign up. Unlike the GRUYERE thread, in this thread you could actually show us your new acquisitions (all purchased with 'found money' or given to you as gifts). At the end of the year you could brag about how much money you made, or about how you managed to shave for the entire year for free.

Here are the official rules:
1) you may enter PIFs
2) you may ask others to give you stuff
3) you may buy ANY shaving-related item at ANY cost, but you must pay for the item(s) with funds you acquired by selling something you ALREADY OWN. You may NOT buy something, sell it, and then claim that money as usable in this restraint, unless, of course, you turned a profit selling said item. For example, if you find a Toggle at an antique store for $10 and sell it for $300, you may use the $290 toward a shaving-related purchase. The $290 is 'found money,' as they say.
4) you must know exactly how much money you have 'earned' and how much you have spent. Money spent on, for example, mailing or insuring items you sold most be accounted for on the negative side of your balance sheet
5) it is NOT necessary to end the year with less shaving gear than you started with. Sure, you could sell 25 old Gillettes and buy one new razor, but you don't have to. You could, for example, sell a Wolfman and buy five Razorock razors. As long as you bring in more money than you spend, it doesn't matter.

Anybody interested? Anybody want to play along?

I’m in and think this is a great idea. One of my issues with the restraints is that all the pretty pictures just make me want to buy even more. At least with this challenge I’ll be moving something out of my collection before I can add to it.

I have a question though. If given money or a gift card for say your birthday, can you use that ‘found money’ to purchase shave gear?

This sounds like what I have been doing for quite a while.

I'd be happy to play along.
It's much more do-able than Gruyere!
Perhaps you'd need to have the participants explain what they sold to aqcuire the new item? Should keep things interesting and the thread going?

This is sort of an idea I've toyed with lately. The notion of limiting myself to using only "passive" income for shave related purchases.

Which for me would be things like whatever I might win on scratch-offs, which my family does on Christmas (only $15 won this year...). I do not do those at all, otherwise. Whatever I get from recycling aluminum cans, which is roughly $20 for two contractor size bags of the stuff, crushed. Selling off things I don't need--not just shaving gear--on eBay. Lose change, accumulated in a jar over time. Someone even mentioned plasma donation, which I used to do years ago, in college.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea.

Just sold a couple aftershaves for $70. After the PayPal fee I’ve got $67.91 in my budget for new purchases. This is fun!

Edited to add: I’ll have to deduct the shipping as well once I know what that is.

Looks like we’ve got at least a few people who are interested in participating between @AshleyC and @Shaun asleep and myself. Would @kingfisher like to get an official thread going since the original idea was his? Is 4 people enough to start a yearly challenge like this?
We could just use this thread to post our sales and acquisitions, and maybe keep each other updated about the financial balance for our shaving.

And just like the GRUYERE, we are currently in a restock period for buying necessities such as blades, etc.

I did sell two hones (black shadow & green shadow slates) for 110 euros on the 24th of december. I already spent the entire sum I had remaining (- transaction, shipping + AliE coupons & coins) on a Yaqi slant 37.

So as it stand I'm all out of funds for new aqcuisitions.
I'm currently trying to unload three straight razors and a Rocket.

Don't really have anything on my want list atm. My Proraso green splash is running low-ish and I would be very tempted in buying a TFS almond 1 kg brick - but they're sold out everywhere.
I'll lay low until I sell something.

Sure! I'm in! I don't sell shaving stuff, but I didn't join the normal restraint because I think their rule #6 (no participation in PIFs) is silly. Other than that one rule, I'd be in over there. I'm in here for sure. I don't need any other shaving stuff I need to cull the herd.
