Thayers Witch Hazel After Shave

Pros: Price, non-alcohol
Thayers is a solid WH that is made from distilled witch hazel as opposed to the alcohol-laced extracts found in your average supermarket/pharmacy. I bought my from a local natural foods store here in Utah. I keep a old pomade puck filled with cotton pads soaked in Thayers that I apply to my face while I police up after my shave. My facial redness has been reduced dramatically since I started using this.

Pros: not too drying, closes the pores nicely and feels good.
Cons: 20% alcohol
I use it directly after shaving but let the alcohol cook off first before I put it on my face. I then follow up with a balm (D.R. Harris milk) or lotion (Nivea). For the money it does a good job, no razor burn, closes the pores without stinging. I don't find the scent particularly endearing, but it is fairly mild and doesn't last long. I also have a bottle of Gold Dachs and use the same procedure. It seems to offer may be a little more moisturizing, but at $ 25.00 it costs more than 4 times as much.

Pros: Refreshing and soothing
Cons: Has alcohol so will sting
Since I am hooked on Thayers products and have used all of their witch hazels this far from the sampler pack they offer I had to try this one. This product was not available in the local hippie stores in my area so I purchased it on line. The bottle is pretty small, 4oz I think. The price was the same as one of the larger ones they offer even though its half the size but I had to try it.
It has the witch hazel scent and a slight alcohol scent like rubbing alcohol. It did have some sting to it but worked just as well as their other witch hazels most comparable to their original astringent version.
I like this product but might stick to just their regular witch hazels as an aftershave.

I bought this because unlike other Thayer's products this AS does not include glycerin, and I found the other Thayer's products to be too tacky. This product has a couple of good things going for it: the price and the "finish" or "face feel." Unfortunately, this product also has some downsides that are difficult for me to disregard: the scent is awful (smells like vodka laced with witch hazel), although it doesn't last too long; it has a high alcohol burn; and it tends to thicken and foam up while applying it. Yuck. To be honest, the "lathering" aspect was the deal killer for me, and I would have purchased this again strictly for the awesome finish that the aloe provides.

As far as "unscented" AS splashes are concerned, this is OK and worthy of at least a test drive. Lucido is better, IMO.

I've been using this stuff for the past month and a half. It's a good no-nonsense product.

I got mine for around $6 which is a little high for only 4 ounces of this stuff. I wish the bottles were just a little bigger. The quality is up there as with all Thayer's products. You can tell it is made from pure, natural ingredients. There is nothing fancy in this after shave and that is what I like. It's just a very simple product that works very well.

I have found that it is about the most efficacious after shave I have used. First, my skin seems to really like aloe. This after shave really leaves my skin soft and supple, I assume this is due to the aloe. I don't find that it is poor at moisturizing as others have. The witch hazel in there also soothes my skin after shaving. I have been using witch hazel in some form after my shaves for years now. This stuff really does have a pretty strong alcohol burn. It gets you good but it instantly zaps any skin irritation you might have gotten. In fact, I think this stuff is about the best I've used because it completely neutralizes razor burn for me. It says on the bottle "Extra Cool" but I don't find it all that cooling. The scent is not very good. The scent is purely natural and smells like pure alcohol mixed with grapefruit and witch hazel (all ingredients in the after shave). It's an odd mix but thankfully the scent burns off completely within about 10 seconds of application.

I apply this after shave with a cotton pad as I always have with witch hazel or any other toner. The top of the bottle is twist off and wide open so I am afraid if I use it as a splash I will pour out way too much each time. After it dries I follow it up with Nivea Sensitive After Shave Balm just for some extra soothing and suppleness to my skin though I could probably stop at just the Thayer's.

Overall this is a great after shave that leaves my face feeling better than just about any other after shave ever has. I appreciate that it is a simple blend of time tested, 100% natural, skin soothing ingredients. Give it a shot, it really works well.

Bought a few bottles online for $3.00 apiece, can't argue with the price, had high hopes but was disappointed. Strong alcohol burn, doesn't work for razor burn as well as Speick A/S spash, doesn't leave my sking feeling as good as Speick.

A good no nonsense after shave treatment. Just seems to work while not being fancy and great if you want an aftershave that will not interfere with your cologne. Another solid selection from Thayers along with the rest of their witch hazel toners and astringents. I really like the old time feeling of the product and I plan to always have this on hand.
So I've been using Thayer's Rose Toner as an aftershave splash for awhile. Superb Product. However, I was curious about this alcohol based aftershave so I thought I would try it. Used it this morning and found it just okay. I applied it to a damp face and put a small amount in my palm, wet my other hand, rubbed my hands together, then gently patted it on my face. There is a slight tingle but not an intense burn.

The alcohol is probably good for antiseptic properties but the same is true for any other alcohol aftershave. Also, this doesn't contain glycerin like Thayer's toner for extra moisturizing and the smell is not great. The aloe in it doesn't get much of a smell, so you're basically smelling pure alcohol.

The price isn't great per oz. given that this is a 4 oz. bottle and is probably less expensive to make per oz. than the big Thayer's bottles of toner. Overall, if you need alcohol in your toner, maybe it would be better to try one of the big Thayer bottle varieties that do contain a small amount of alcohol. Or if you like the Rose Toner as I do, maybe you could mix it up in a bottle with some drugstore rubbing alcohol and a little water.

Again, this isn't so bad that I'll be throwing it out, but I won't be replacing my bottle when it's gone. I'll probably use it in conjunction with the Rose Toner on days where my shave has been unusually rough and I feel like I need a little extra antiseptic from the alcohol.

I didn't rate it for cooling b/c this doesn't seem to be a cooling type product, i.e. no menthol. I also left out the razor burn rating b/c I didn't seem to have razor burn this morning when I tried it.

I have to heartily disagree with this one.:frown:
I thought this would a really nice aftershave, but I didn't realize there were non-alchohol thayers from the reviews I've read in forums.
This does have an alcohol burn that is worse than regular alcohol based aftershaves. Its as If I dumped a bottle of grain alcohol on my face. The $4 bottle of no label drug store witch hazel is so much nicer on my face. I put some in an empty Old Spice bottle and love it. I have sensitive skin, so maybe that is it?
I think my skin would agree with the non-alcohol thayers, and it does agree with the bottle of Mennen Skin Bracer Joel just wrote up, which comparatively is cool and refreshing and still has alcohol in it.

I give the extra cool Thayers low marks:
3 for moisturizing, because it doesn't
3 for cooling sensation, because it doesn't compared to menthol aftershaves
0 for no alcohol burn, because it does
5 for scent because it doesn't, which is good or bad, and why do you have to add witch hazel scent to witch hazel?

Still an inexpensive aftershave, but to me it doesn't deserve the high marks in my book.

Good stuff. This is my go to aftershave. I put it on after shaving and then put on a moisturizing aftershave with a scent that I like-- this stuff has no scent.

But, it's cheap, and does what it says. I do get a little alcohol burn. Also, there isn't much of a cooling sensation either.

But, what they hay. I really like the stuff.

I have been using the same bottle for almost 6 months now and am just now running out, maybe another week left. All I can say is I am going to keep using this stuff, it works that well for me. I use it as a splash right after shaving. It lets me know how well a job I did shaving, however the alcohol burn is just slight even on the worst days and quicky vanishes. I find it works well with razor burn. My only dislike is its lack of moistureizing. I usually follow it up with a good balm such as proraso or such, and this combo works perfect for me. I keep trying numerous other aftershaves and just keep coming back to Thayers AS. Their is no smell to it, so it will blend with any other cologne or scented ASB. Just really like it. Wish it was available locally though.

I thought it was about time for someone to write a review for this product since I see a number of us listing it in our SOTD posts.

Ingredients: Natural Witch Hazel Extract and Fragrance, Aloe Vera, Purified Water and Natural Grain Alcohol (50%+ as a preservative). I'm just guessing on the alcohol content as the 20% listed on Thayers website is incorrect since this aftershave is flammable.

Price: The retail for this is only $6 and most web pharmacies sell it for around $4. That's pretty good considering you get a 4oz bottle.

Quality: Very good. The ingredients are all natural which is one of the reasons I like Thayers products.

Fights Razor Burn: Kills the burn instantly. Enough said.

Cooling Sensation: The bottle says "extra cool" but I find I really don't get a "frozen face" feel even when I really dump this on. But it is still a pleasant fresh feeling.

Scent: Thayers says it is scented with natural witch hazel fragrance. I'm not really sure what witch hazel smells like but I do like this scent. It is entirely inoffensive and only last for a few minutes anyway.

Efficacy: It does what it's supposed to. It reduces shaving irritations and leaves the skin feeling soft. The high alcohol content gives it good antiseptic properties. In addition I also like how this aftershave does not leave my face feeling sticky. No residue whatsoever.

Moisturizing: For all its alcohol content I find that it is really not too drying. The aloe vera might be the reason for this.

No Alcohol Burn: Once again if it didn't ignite I wouldn't even know this stuff was mostly alcohol. It really does not burn at all unless you have some considerable razor burn. And if that is the case you have more to worry about than your choice of aftershave.

Also of note is that I have used this splash in an atomizer and also the traditional way and have found both methods to provide the same excellent results. Some might be interested to know that this aftershave does not foam up when sprayed though an atomizer nozzle the way some splashes do. I'm almost on my second bottle of this stuff and I'd say it has definitely become part of my shaving routine.
