What's new

Thank you

I would like to say thank you to all of the members on the brown leaf posting great advise regarding pipe tobacco smoking. I have been pipe smoking off and on for about fifteen years now. And in just a few weeks of reading on here, I have greatly improved on my smoking pleasures.

Until last week I would load the tobacco three times as taught from the tobocco store clerk many years ago by loading it three times. The problem is that I have always packed down to the point where the draw would be compared to sipping a thick milkshake. I could keep it lit sometimes and other not which leads to how I always would load the fresh tobacco directly from the package to the pipe without drying. So right away the tobacco would be too wet, but towards the end (could take a few weeks to a year to finish the pouch of tobacco) it would burn fine, but my jaw muscles would get sore from puffing the hard draw. I have had one pipe over 12 years and another over 8, both briers, but they have never been cleaned because I remember hearing someone at the tobacco shop saying you don't want to clean your pipes out too much if at all.

So now in the last week, I have just received more tobacco from cigars international. I pulled out what I needed and let it sit spread out for a half hour to an hour before loading. When loading, I have a smooth draw like from drinking soda pop from a straw and then have cleaned my pipes out for the first time in a decade!

Thank you all for the good information posted on here, it really made a great difference.

Very cool. The guys here are awesome. And the really cool thing is that you can get a bunch of different perspectives and methods to accomplish the same things. It makes smoking more enjoyable. Half the fun is figuring out what works best for you.

Now....Let's talk tobacco choices...

Grab something to drink and fill up a bowl. We may be here a while!

It is great to have you here with us, J! Don't be afraid to post your experiences. Who knows. The next learning experience may be taught by you!

That's great!

I gave up on the entire variety of loading techniques, now I just stuff it in there and pull test draws until the draw is right. That works better for me than anything else. And yeah, there's almost no such thing as too dry, while too wet seems to cause all manner of problems.

For a while I was not cleaning my pipes, out of laziness. Lately I've probably been cleaning them too much, but they sure smell pleasant after a nice Jim Beam cleaning.

Congrats. J. Glad you had a great smoke!

As for the three pinch loading thing...that's just a suggestion to get people used to loading a pipe. I have a pouch of Prince Albert that's been sitting on the counter for a few weeks that I load out of a bit. Last night I just put the bowl of my Charatan in the pouch, scooped up some and packed it down until it was full and felt right (old codger scoop), then went out on the back porch and fired up the bowl. Only one relight until it burned down to about the last quarter or less of a bowl where it got a little harsh and I dumped it.

I think I'll do some Carter Hall in the Savinelli in a bit...and maybe some Hal 'O the Wynd this evening.

What kind of 'baccy do you have, and what brand of briars?

Oh, and what did you use to clean your pipes with? I use Everclear.

Great to hear. The members in the BL are bar none the best in B&B.

I usually clean my pipes when the taste starts to turn. It gets a little ashy, maybe a bit sour, not as sweet nor dry as before. So I run a pipe cleaner dipped about 1/4-1/2 inch into some high proof alcohol and run that through the pipe. I'll take the stem off and clean the inside of the pipe (mortise). Let it sit for a day and then it gets back into the rotation.

Everyone has forgotten to say not to let the high octane alcohol drip onto the finish of the pipe....

Good catch. J, have a towel at hand incase you somehow get some on the wood of the pipe. Not much is needed to clean the pipe.
