Canadian Help

I have a friend in New Brunswick that we would like to send a Christmas gift. I ordered wine last year from a winery in a western Canadian province and there were all sorts of trouble with the bottles freezing, corks popping out, etc. Can anyone recommend a Canadian source for gifts other than the "gift basket" that I have found all over the net?

Well, there's always the ubiquitous Gift Card option. Widespread Canadian retailers like The Bay and Canadian Tire are probably safe bets. (Both those businesses may offer internet shopping with delivery, so you can find something to actually have sent, rather than just the quasi-money.)

But that may not be your cup of tea.

You can probably find internet vendors of smoked salmon who can ship to your friend.

Eaton's and The Bay (aka the Hudson's Bay Co) are the two big national department store chains, you should be able to buy them something nice off either's website.

Personally, for long-distance gifting I like to buy friends gift certificates to the nicer restaurant in their home town.

Thanks for all the help and advice. I guess the largest city near him is Moncton. He lives in Red Bank on the Miramachi. So with that in mind, anyone know of nice places to eat in Moncton or even Saint John?

The only place of business that there is more of per capita is liquor stores, around here anyways.

The gift boxes are nice, but almost $50 shipping, and they cannot include any alcohol, it may be better for me to consider something else.

Yeah, but that's Calgary. Everywhere else it's Timmies Timmies Timmies. (Maybe not downtown Vancouver where they want to think they are Seattle and drink out of green cups. :001_rolle)

I can't help with shipping, but they should be able to add booze to them, as long as you get it shipped directly from them to your friend.

According the website

"*Price does not include alcohol. Alcohol can be added at LCBO price. Some items may be substituted for similar items of equal or greater value. May not be as pictured"

unless of course you want it shipped to you tx, then up to your friend in NB.

I've never ordered from them, so I can't tell you from experience, but I would hope that the info on the website is accurate. Either way, good luck in your search.

Hudson's Bay Co. is North America's oldest company. Hbc gift cards work at The Bay, Home Outfitters, Zellers, and Fields. I work for Hbc . . . so I may be biased but I've always particularly liked shopping at Home Outfitters.

I contacted the company today regarding this and they said they couldn't ship alcohol outside the province. I have run into this a lot over the last couple of years. It seems because of the strict regulations on alcohol, it is one thing that is very difficult to obtain for a gift. The wineries that I have dealt with said they shouldn't ship it across the provinces, but they do. But after the problems last year with the shipment freezing, that may be a summer time call.

Yeah.. there is still stupid restrictions on inter-provincial trade on booze...

Thus the reason why the major brewers (Labatts and Molsons) have a brewery in each province..

Glad I live 5 minutes from Quebec where I can get wine and beer at the grocery store instead of only at the LCBO or beer store (and yes... the only place to really buy beer here in Ontario is called "the Beer Store"...):thumbdown
