What's new

Dovo or TI

I am having trouble making up my mind. Which is he better razor? The TI Le grelot 6/8 3/4 hollow or the Dovo Bergischer Lowe? I can't make up my mind and would like some help from people who have used them.

The TI is 6/8 - 3/4 hollow= larger and stiffer blade. My first straight and one of my favorites...It is a work horse..
Dovo is a 5/8 full hollow = more flexible. I never shaved with one. I prefer a larger and stiffer blades...ymmv..:001_smile

I shaved with a BL today and it's a fine razor- almost too pretty to use. Haven't acquired a Le Grelot yet, but I don't recall reading a bad word about it. It seems to have tons of fans.

I'd think you could flip a coin and be happy- so many choices.

Yeah, they are both great razors, the BL looks nicer, the LG is plane jane.
The BL is a bit more work to maintain, the gold flake can peel off if you look at it wrong, and water tends to accumulate under the rubber grip on the tang so you gotta watch out for that. Having said that the LG might be better to start with. But really you can't lose with either of these fine razors.

You have narrowed it down to two fine pieces of steel.

So if I was an average user the Ti would retain more value over time considering wear and tear.

From watching the BST, the BL seem to have a higher depreciation than the TI/LG, this is probably because it's so expensive to begin with new.

Also the TI is made from Le grelot blanks and there are a finite supply of these so these have to potential to run out. But Dovo could stop production of the BL too, but that's less probable.

I've got both and they are both excellent razors but if I had to pick one, it would be the Bergischer Lowe. Beautiful to look at and great to use.

I am trying to buy my first new straight from what they have in stock at Superiorshave because I can drive there and pick it up. If I am gonna lay out that kind of money I want the best shaver not necessarily the eye candy. They have a pretty good choice of Dovo's and a few TI's.

I think that the Bergischer Lowe is the better shaver of the two. Not by much but that's my thoughts. YMMV.
It also doesn't hurt that it is a beautiful razor.

Sorry to differ, but there's no comparison. The LeGrelot is just about the best overall razor you can buy for any amount of money -- probably the one razor I would keep if I knew I could only have one blade for the rest of my life. The BL is a nice razor too, but a cut or two below the LeGrelot, in my opinion. Don't really like the BL's looks, either, but that's probably just me.

They are both beautiful for different reasons, the classic simple elegance of the Le Grelot and its legendary status as a shaver. The Bergischer Lowe for its striking looks and equally great shave. (I haven't used one but I'm going based on others comments).

Personally if I had the choice of the two I would match Jeff's choice and go with the Le Grelot, but thats my personality. Choose the one that feels right for you... If all else fails, buy both :)

All of this talk about the Bergischer Löwe and now I want one too! I saw there was one in teh BST today just missed it though.
I'm still new at straight razors but the Le Grelot have a very special feel to them that the Dovo's do not, but I haven't tried the Prima Klang yet, I have one just haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

Le Grelot and Filarmonica #13 are my favorite so far. But I like to try everything :p

Make sure you have Jarrod touch up the edge for you- he does a nice job.

Enjoy the score!

I didn't actually handle both blades though I am sure he would have let me. He and his wife are very nice people. He has a serious stockpile of Coti's. What you see on the website is just the tip of the iceburg. I hope you can see the texture of the scales in these photos. I took them with my iphone.
