Mumblings of a once 20-year-old shaver

Yesterday's shave 12/1/24:

Pre-Shave: Hot Shower and a Face Wash in the shower
Soap: Cella Aloe Vera Shaving Cream
Brush: Gentleman Jon DE
Razor: Gillette Tech
Blade: Astra SP (1)
After-Shave: Nivea Sensitive Balm

Song of the Shave: Baby it's Cold Outside by Frank Sinatra

Rating: 7.5

Man my face is tender and I don't know why. I noticed it on the plane ride back to school, and again once I started my face lather. Didn't hurt, but it was noticeable. I only did one pass today and will likely carry that over into today. Lather was alright today probably because I was wary of irritating my face more. Aftershave helped make my face feel better. Just super odd that it came out of nowhere like that. Here's to a better shave tonight.

Winter weather is very drying on our skin. You might consider using a pre shave cream to help in nourishing and fortifying your skin for the shave. New brush users sometimes have an exuberance towards unneeded pressure and over splaying the brush. This can cause skin irritation. All brushes are best used with a good concentration on using the tips only.

That's not a bad idea, I remember you recommending the "Freelette Pre & After Electric Shave". Is there one you would recommend? I use a moisturizing aftershave.

I've been trying to be better about this and being soft and kind to my brush and skin

With pre shaves there are two types. Some heavier lotion based and some heavier oil based. Pros and cons. Trying them out is important to see how they perform in your shave routine. I use SV Shea Butter massaged into my face and head skin and give it ten minutes to absorb. Some gentlemen do not afford that time in their shave routine. You could apply it before bed as some have and it will nourish your skin. There are so many pre shaves to choose from, I had tried at least a dozen over the years. The oil, butter or grease based are my favourites because of the lubrication they provide which is slightly better than a lotion based pre shave. You will just have to try a few out. I would caution and recommend that any soap, pre or post shave products that do not agree with your skin should be discarded Not Used Up. Your skin is more valuable.

A moisturizing post shave is an excellent idea. I use a few SV Mango Butter being the main one. Doesn’t matter how or what you use to shave. Skin damage always occurs. I also use hydrating skin creams between shaves. Our skin is our largest organ and the easiest to care for.

Right on the money, I will try some lotion before bed on my face. I wish I had more time during my shaves but school is kicking my rear.

Dont stop with just the recent ones. This subforum is a font of hyperfixation on technique as well as history, gear, and seemingly unrelated topics. Learned a lot more about jazz, holidays and festivals of South Asia, and a wider range of literature and movies than I knew about before finding this section.

Luckily I fly home for 3 weeks of blissfully uninterrupted break from school on Friday the 13th so I'll have 3 weeks to read and get to know everyone better!

Wow... First and foremost I need to thank @blethenstrom and @Guido75 for recommending and helping with the bowl lather. I usually post in the morning after I wake up but I couldn't wait. World of difference to put it lightly. I thought I had a good face lather but that was blown out of the water on my first bowl lather attempt. My lather was dense, soft, and silky smooth. Maybe needed a bit more water so it is a little slicker, but the splash of water on my face before lathering helped. I told myself I was only going to do one pass cus my face was still a bit irritated but I did 2. I got a weeper on my jawline on that second pass XTG so I guess I got what I deserve. I took about 3-5 minutes to wip up my lather and went back to the water every 30 seconds or so but wasn't really keeping track. I've attached before and after's of my lather. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Got another weeper on my chin where I have some acne so I gotta keep an eye on it. Smooth shave overall. Reapply lather between passes for the first time was a pleasurable experience too. Giving another go at bowl lather tomorrow (and likely every day after that to be honest). Getting some lotion tomorrow to use on my face in the mornings to keep from drying out. I'm sticking to one pass tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a great Tuesday!

This is fantastic news my friend. I am so glad that it worked out well for you.

Is it swell time?
Ill sheepishly admit I don't know what BOSC is...
No my bad - should have included the explanation.

Brotherhood of Shaving Crazies (BOSC).

As per founder Cal:

B&B Shaver Categories:
1.
The people who come to B&B initially for help and advice.
2. Those that have passed through the initial stages, and all of a sudden… shaving has become a hobby.
3. Those for whom the hobby has become an OBSESSION. Y’know, multiple Acquisition Disorders and the desire to do all sorts of shaving experiments that your grandfather would have laughed out loud at (or maybe cried). Enabling others (to “help” them by exacerbating their existing ADs). All that weird sort of stuff.

I will let you simmer and develop some more to full bloom, but feel free to pook around:
