Blade Sharpness Research Project

This evening I measured the Wizamet Super Iridium Extra Stainless blade from Proctor and Gamble Russia. We had some interest in it, and I already had it in the slot for blades I wanted to try for my own interest, so I moved it to the front. This one was produced on May 19, 2023. It comes in excellent packaging; A nice cardboard tuck of ten blades, and the individual blades awe wrapped in printed waxed paper with medium wax dots.

1000008478.jpg

1000008481.jpg

It looks exceptionally smooth under a microscope. The bevel is shorter than sharper blades, but it is finely ground, heavily and finely honed, and moderately coated. This blade is quite consistent, and only moderately sharp, and moderately durable, but it is highly regarded and it seems to sell out despite a fairly expensive price point. I am guessing people like it for its smoothness. That honing goes almost all the way up the bevel and it probably makes a difference in how the blade glides across skin.

1000008477.jpg

After testing, the coating and bevel are worn and smoothed out, and the blade shows some moderate chipping along the apex typical of razor blades.

Oh you're good, you mindreader! 👍

@helicopter Kudos to this project of yours and it would absolutely help many of us here.
I don't want to add any more burden to your work but I really believe it will improve this thread.
Forget it if its too much of a work.

Blade list is getting long and not easy to search for a specific data anymore.
Is it possible to somehow include a hyper link to the exact page of each blade data?

Maybe a hyperlink on each blade name in your graph?

Well that is indeed interesting concerning the Astra SP vs 7OC Black.

I am surprised we don't see it more often when so many plants and companies have dozens of blades. It is fairly common for a plant to make blades for several markets, with 1, 2, or 3 brands in an individual market, and a whole line of blades under each brand. If you buy an existing brand that has a loyal following for each product, I can see keeping it, but if you are going to launch a new product under one of your brands, you can save yourself a lot of trouble by repackaging a top product that already exists somewhere else in your portfolio.

Of course, Chinese blades are a big exception. There are loads of white label blades and very little transparency. On ALibaba and Temu, you can order cases of blades and they will print whatever you want on the package. It is funny, I will order 8 different blades to try on Ali Express and receive 2 of the ones I ordered, 3 Flydear Super Platinums, 2 Matgicols, and a Pearl. If I ask the seller they say "yeah, its the same thing" and I usually just take their word for it because it is difficult to check.

What's more surprising is that Astra SP's data shows better and more consistent all through out the test than 7'OC black.

Indeed; it would be a much better look for them if the expensive one were the one that performed slightly better. It is a small difference, though. If it isn't the same blade, it might as well be. We often see more variation than this between batches of P&G blades, and P&G is more consistent than most companies. I bet if we tested ten batches of each of these two, we would have like 85% overlap.

I agree we need an index of sorts. If I had access to edit my opening post, I might just put it at the top of the thread. I had also considered using the Wiki for this, but it seemed tedious; same for the "reviews" function of the website. You'd have to pay me to get me to bother with the creator side of either of those. I was thinking about doing the same thing with the chart, but I think I will just add a table of hyperlinks to the review format to keep the initial effort and the recurring effort low. I want to keep it so that most of the time I am putting into the project is actually measuring and taking pictures, rather than writing and making reports.

If wanting to refresh my memory on a specific blade, I just type the name in search and choose search this thread option. Easy enough although a list of blades tested along with the post# which has the specific data could make it more organized.

This afternoon, I took a look at another blade that has been getting attention lately, the RK Stainless blade imported by Henson from Tigaksha in India. There were some comments praising this blade, and it looks like it will be mild, so maybe there is something to it. I usually prefer evenly ground, sharp, and durable blades with consistent edges, so I probably won't like it as much as some people do.

It comes in a cardboard tuck wrapped in waxed paper with a small wax dot. It is not marked with a date code, but there is a lot number 8 on it. The blade says it is specifically made for the Henson AL13. I wonder if that means the printing, only, or if there is something meaningful there. I think they would have done better with Chinese white label blades.

1000008496.jpg

The primary bevel is unevenly ground and coarse. The secondary bevel is moderately ground, and the edge is honed a good bit. Some of the jaggedness of the primary bevel is still there at the edge after honing. It probably feels alright, but these scratches usually make weak spots that don't wear evenly. It has a thick and even coating.

1000008499.jpg

After testing, the edge is in pretty good shape with some dents in it, and the coating gone. This is one of those tough and resilient steels that is difficult to get very sharp or to keep sharp, but might feel smoother than a chipped up edge on your typical heavily used razor steel.

It is pretty similar to the Treet Dura Sharp in performance, so maybe Eric will like it.Treet is Pakastani, though, so don't confuse them if you don't want to get yourself into trouble.

It had one sharp edge and one dull edge. I don't like to see that, but it is fairly common.

This evening, we have the Astra SS blue Russian blades. This first one, which was manufactured December 1, 2019, performed rather poorly, and anticipating objections, I went ahead and measured another one to see how it was. The stenciling on this blade is unusual for a Russian P&G blade, with no grind numbers and outlined typeface.

1000008503.jpg

The back of the blade is blank. The writing on the tab of the tuck indicated the blade is made in Russia.

1000008504.jpg

Under the microscope, it looks like an Astra. It is finely and evenly ground, with a consistent scratch pattern, and has a thick and even coating.

1000008506.jpg

After testing, the coating is worn, the edge has smoothed a bit, and there is lots of medium chipping along the edge, typical of heavily worn razor steels.

1000008518.jpg

The blade from April 23, 2017 has typical Russian Gillette stenciling. The tuck also indicates it is made in Russia.

1000008508.jpg

1000008509.jpg

It looks very similar under a microscope. The coating is a but thinner, but these two blades look like they were made to the same specifications, but this one looks a little better. The coating is more even, and it looks a little smoother on the bevel.

1000008513.jpg

After testing, there is some chipping, but this blade is in much better condition than the other one. I would not be afraid to shave with it in this condition, but a new blade would work a little better.

1000008517.jpg

So what's going on here? Well, due to the similarities in the edges, I believe these are both Gillette blades, and I trust that since both tucks are marked with Russian origin, I believe that is also true. I don't think the inferior blade is a counterfeit; I think it is just poorly made by Gillette. It wouldn't surprise me if the one from 2019 was made in a different Russian facility, or on a different production line with different machinery.

Let's take a look at the measurements.

Information Summary:

1721788585598.png

It will be nice to see how these compare to the Indian one, but I am waiting for it to come here from RBC. The 2019 one isn't terrible; it is reasonably durably and consistent; it has a smooth and beautifully honed bevel; it just isn't how I expect Astras to be, having used only the sharper ones.

1721788846907.png

I was thinking we already had the Russian Astra SP on here, but it looks like we actually need to do that one again with the current methodology for comparability.

This evening I measured the Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum black blade from India.

You're really on a roll with the blade testing!

The issue with these blades is the current price. They used to be a good deal at around $15/100 a few years ago. Then, the price shot up to maybe double that. So, compared with blades such as BIC Chrome Platinum, they are not a good value nowadays.

One reason the Wizamet is popular is because the former Iridium Super was a great all-around blade at a reasonable price. It became a favorite of many people here. This is another case where the price shot way up and the product quality decreased.

Both blades are riding on their past reputation, IMHO.

There is an unanswered question that comes up here fairly often: Are Lord blades all the same, just three or four different types with different packaging? Or not.

The Lord Silver Star blades are one that is pretty popular here and many people seem to think they're a cut above many of the other Lord blades. Is it really the case, though? Maybe they're basically the same as the Lord Platinum? No one knows for sure. They do seem like a really good value at $8/100. They seem to work well in more aggressive razors.

Not made for these times.

Lord Silver Star and Lord Platinum are very different, imho.

All YMMV, of course.

I have not read this entire thread but will add that I've had inconsistencies with Gillette Platinum and Gillette Silver Blues. Additional magnification may help also in your assessment. I will link some pics of GPs that are brand new. These chips in the bevel were consistent through multiple NEW blades.
