Lather from soap

Is anybody able to make lather with shaving soap?

I'm beginning to think it can only be made with shaving cream. If you get lather from soap worthy of lather pics, how do you do it? Is there a special soap and brush combo more likely to produce this result?

Of course it can be done. You just have to load longer. With a cream its easy to squirt out a ton of cream in a second. With a soap you have to scrape it up so you need to load longer. Croaps are easiest to do this with.

From what I've read here, most folks try to make the lather as dry as Foamy. A dry brush won't pick up much soap or make a slick lather. I started lathering long before You Tube and the forums. The only way I make lather from soap is with a sopping wet brush, swirl it around for 30 seconds or so on the soap and then take it to my face or a bowl. A minute later I have mounds of great lather. Works as well with Arko as it does Williams.

An Italian fellow here known as Marcos has been pushing this method for a long time, sometimes to great ridicule, but it works.

Lane; I get it with Tabac soap and I have hard water. I load on the puck with a dripping wet brush which puddles up. I swirl until the brush drinks it up along with soap. Loaded brush to the bowl and more swirling. I usually have to add water to the bowl to get the lather I want. Hope you're all settled in with your new job and location; Welcome to Wyoming!

Pay more attention to how your shaves are than how the lather looks. My everyday lather looks nothing like "lather porn". YMMV

This, for sure. For me anyway, lather porn and good lather are two completely different things. With the soaps I use, its slickest point comes just before its fluffiest. My fluffiest biggest bowls of lather are usually when I take it a bit too far.

+1

The key for me with soaps is time. Creams whip up in seconds. With a triple milled soap I need 30-60 seconds of loading and stirring. As I recently learned, soak the brush, then shake it out only once, and the lather explodes from the soap after about 30 seconds. The brush has to be wet, but soaked makes for big bubbles. That's why only one shake - it's gotta be wet, but not sopping.

That's with Cella. I can do that with any of the soaps I have. It's really not that hard.

I'm a bit confused by this thread.... Are you asking for technique advice or, is this a joking type post ? I meant this with the utmost respect, but of course people get great lather myself included with soap everyday with near any water type. I use hard soaps almost exclusively though occasional a croap and rarely a cream...... I will agree though creams are easier to lather.

I meant this in a serious way. I have been making lather using hard soap and a brush for thirty years. My brush never ends up looking like the ice cream cone-like pictures that can be seen all over this forum. But, my lather has always been more than satisfactory for me. I wondered whether I was missing out somehow because my brush never ended up looking like the pictures. From the responses in this thread, bigger lather is not better lather, or somehow slicker or more protective. This idea was revelatory for me.

Thaks to all for the thoughtful responses.

Friends,

Please accept my apology for using language in the initial thread post that was inappropriate for this site and not family friendly. I really do want the language I use to be comfortable for everyone.

Regards,

One of the best ways to get good lather if you can't seem to load the brush is to use the puck directly as a shave stick. This worked very well for me especially wth MWF!!!
