Green Mountain Soap

During my last trip to Merz (where I swore I wouldn't buy anything) I was persuaded by one of the fine gentlemen working there to pick up a puck of Green Mountain. He swore he had tried an awful lot of soap and this was by far his favorite. With that ringing endorsement, and at a mere $11, how could I say no?

After coming home, I did a quick search around B&B to see people's thoughts. Strangely, there has been an absence of discussion around this soap here. I did manage to find one thread from early 2013 where the reviews were "meh" at best. Someone once said "if it's not really talked about here, there's probably a reason" and I was fearful that this may be true for Green Mountain.

Well, after a few weeks of 3017-ing some various samples, it was time to try out the Green Mountain. I picked up the Balsam Spice, because it was a very intriguing scent that I really didn't have well represented in my den. The puck comes in a strange squat round puck that isn't really a good size for any of my bowls (unfortunately I didn't take a before picture of the puck, will try to remember to add one of the partially ground puck later) so I took the grater to the puck and started grating it down to fit in my OS mug.

After about 60 seconds of loading I started to face lather, and I began to worry. The quality of lather was just not there. It was thin, airy, and reminiscent of my first lathers back at the beginning of wet shaving. Uh oh. So I added a little water. No improvement. Shoot. "If it's not really talked about here, there's probably a reason" began ringing through my head and I started to hope that someone would be kind enough to take this off my hands in BST.

Added a little bit more water, and suddenly, LATHER! Rich, creamy, fragrant, lather porn-esque. I was in shock and awe at how much lather was suddenly exploding from my brush and being flung around my bathroom. I had more than enough lather for my standard 3 pass shave plus touch ups, and probably could have gone for a 4th and 5th full pass as well. The glide and cushion were as good as I've ever gotten, and the scent was incredible. Definitely more of a fall/winter scent, but fantastic none the less.

Moral of the story: even if it's not talked about widely here, don't be afraid to try new soaps! And if you have room in your shave den, pick up a puck of Green Mountain! I can't wait to try some of their other scents.

Last time I was at Merz, I got the Lime/Vetiver from Green Mountain as they recommended it so highly. I had the same issue with my synthetic brush as I had to keep adding water. The puck is a strange size, but I ended up grating half of it and putting it in a covered wooden bowl. One thing I noticed as well is that it really has lingering scent as in when I lather it up, my bathroom smells like lime/vetiver for the rest of the morning.

Good to hear it wasn't just me with the lather. The scent is definitely lingering, and complimented my OS well. My bathroom still smelled of cedar an hour later when I was back in the bathroom to brush my teeth before heading to work.

I was pleasantly surprised as they were so adamant about this being such a great product as they have several soaps which could have recommended and I would have purchased just about anything since I had requested a suggestion. I would definitely purchase it again, but in a different scent (just because I like variety).

I was at Merz today and the same gentleman told me about that soap...I haven't grabbed it yet, bit I will soon...I did however...grab a new Fatip open comb :)

This is hilarious! I visited Chicago about a two months ago and had the same experience! I walked away with two scents of Green Mountain (and a lot of other things!). I enjoy the soaps and have noticed that unlike most other ones, the scent of the soap lingers on my face for a while. I like using this soap when I do not plan on wearing a scented AS. Nice scent. Nice performer.

Normally I'd be wary if there was a trend like this and think maybe they just overstocked and need to move product. It's clear that the gentlemen at Merz is making genuine recommendations based on his experience. The scent definitely lingers, and actually have to take that into consideration when choosing an AS.

5 tries and still sub par lather. I have tried more water, less water, grating the soap, etc. I get a ton of lather, just not the thick creamy kind. I love the scent and the ingredient list but I think I am going to pass on this soap in the future.

Do you have particularly hard water? We have some pretty hard water here in Chicago and I find I need to load 60+ seconds to really get creamy lather.
