During my last trip to Merz (where I swore I wouldn't buy anything) I was persuaded by one of the fine gentlemen working there to pick up a puck of Green Mountain. He swore he had tried an awful lot of soap and this was by far his favorite. With that ringing endorsement, and at a mere $11, how could I say no?
After coming home, I did a quick search around B&B to see people's thoughts. Strangely, there has been an absence of discussion around this soap here. I did manage to find one thread from early 2013 where the reviews were "meh" at best. Someone once said "if it's not really talked about here, there's probably a reason" and I was fearful that this may be true for Green Mountain.
Well, after a few weeks of 3017-ing some various samples, it was time to try out the Green Mountain. I picked up the Balsam Spice, because it was a very intriguing scent that I really didn't have well represented in my den. The puck comes in a strange squat round puck that isn't really a good size for any of my bowls (unfortunately I didn't take a before picture of the puck, will try to remember to add one of the partially ground puck later) so I took the grater to the puck and started grating it down to fit in my OS mug.
After about 60 seconds of loading I started to face lather, and I began to worry. The quality of lather was just not there. It was thin, airy, and reminiscent of my first lathers back at the beginning of wet shaving. Uh oh. So I added a little water. No improvement. Shoot. "If it's not really talked about here, there's probably a reason" began ringing through my head and I started to hope that someone would be kind enough to take this off my hands in BST.
Added a little bit more water, and suddenly, LATHER! Rich, creamy, fragrant, lather porn-esque. I was in shock and awe at how much lather was suddenly exploding from my brush and being flung around my bathroom. I had more than enough lather for my standard 3 pass shave plus touch ups, and probably could have gone for a 4th and 5th full pass as well. The glide and cushion were as good as I've ever gotten, and the scent was incredible. Definitely more of a fall/winter scent, but fantastic none the less.
Moral of the story: even if it's not talked about widely here, don't be afraid to try new soaps! And if you have room in your shave den, pick up a puck of Green Mountain! I can't wait to try some of their other scents.
