What's new

Razumny's Straight Razor storage projects

With the purchases off the BST today, I am up to four straights, and I don't imagine that's about to shrink anytime soon, probably the opposite. So, I want somewhere nice to put them all.

Project #1: Cigar box conversion

What I'm planning on doing, is sourcing a nice cigar box from one of the Cigar dealers in town, then getting some nice-looking plywood, which I will have cut to size, and glue in, with slits to ease picking a Straight up out of it's hidey-hole.

What I'm looking to end up with, is something like this:

So, anyway, that's the plan. I'm hoping to have room for at least seven straights (which seems to be "traditional"), but more would be good, too.

Project #2: Roll-up case

Another thing I am also planning on doing, is making a roll-up case for seven straights. I'll make it out of Canvas, I think, possibly lined with something else for smoothness. The tie-off will be Paracord.

..........yes, please post photos.............

............would be great to see the final products..........

.......wish i was that talented..........

I have a cigar store with a very large inventory where the cigar manager holds the nice cigar boxes for me when I ask. I love when a compmany has a limited edition cigar, Anniversary or other special run. Seems like they put toghter some really well built boxes and real humidors in same cases. The cigar shop is just going to toss em otherwise. Several of Internet ones sell the boxes but it's a crap shoot. I
have l sorts of items stores in them. I built one for all of my air brushes, gun parts, model parts you name it I probably have something stores in a cigar box. I have given gifts where I bult a case for the item out of a cigar box. Those always ate big hits.
I can see a need for a case and roll. Razor collections seem to keep making babies even when you say your done.

I've been thinking some more about it. The roll up will have black canvas, with crimson fabric on the inside. Now, to source it.

i made a razor case out of a cigar box a while back. it holds an even dozen in the slots + 6 more in places tucked under the razors in the slots if i want. i is padded with royal blue felt over the padding(bottom). i used padauk as the blocks 4 the slots i cut the slots with my miter saw. the top slots are just slight cuts into the corner of the padauk block. i fits tight but is removable if i want. it was easy 2 construct and works rather well IMO.$Picture 260.jpgi got mine off ebay for a small sum, i believe shipping was more than i bid. tom

I cannot believe this thread was started today. Just yesterday I picked up a cigar box at Binny’s and was going to start a thread asking how to go about this. I will be taking notes... Thanks for sharing and pics, lots a pics.

Local cigar place here sells plain boxes for $2, fancy ones for $3 or $4. I typically pick up one or two for free with my cigar AD.

I picked up some fabric for the Roll-up yesterday, black canvas and some nice shiny lilac-colored fabric with scrollwork all over it. Now to get to my mother's to sow it up. I think I'll follow tradition, and make the first one for seven straights, with some additional space to cover it all up on the right-hand side.

So, here's a quick update on what I've done:

I've cut the fabric I need from the larger pieces I bought, and am going to go to my mum's in a moment, and stitch it all up.

I'm figuring a 2-inch slit per straight razor, seven razors in total. The fold under which they will lie will be four inches deep, and the second fold will cover it all.

As I said, I went to my mother's place previously today, and finished the roll-up case. I am very, very pleased indeed with how it turned out, and I couldn't have timed it better, as my two new straights arrived today.

Photos you asked for, and photos you shall have!

Above: The two fabrics have been attached in the top and bottom, and tailor's chalk has been used to line up the slits. The seams are evenly spaced, at 2 inches between each, and the seams go from the bottom to the top.

The knives are almost completely covered by the pockets, only the tang, and a very small part of the scales, show. To the right is the paracord used to tie it all together for travelling or storage.

I am planning on writing up a pattern for this, which I will make available to any and all. Maybe you'll improve on my design? Who knows?
