Movie Recommendations for Halloween

That said...I will admit I am a John Carpenter fan. The Thing was fantastic and is a true classic!

I make a point to always watch The Thing every October. it's probably my favorite horror flick of all time. great story, great actors, great soundtrack...it has it all

between wolf creek, crocs, great whites, funnel web spiders, taipan snakes, box jellyfish, stonefish and redbacks.....how is anyone in Australia still alive?

Beer. Fixes everything.

Speaking of redbacks, I've found five big fat ones in my house over the last few weeks. Summers coming...

SiBurning (and everyone else) thanks for all the info.

I'm glad to see someone else mention Dark City, I thought that one was a great sleeper hit.

and it's true, no one has really pulled off Lovecraft yet. I think S. King tried with a story in Nightmare + Dreamscapes, but would have to check--I remember the TV version being so-so.

There actually is some good Lovecraft: http://www.lurkerfilms.com/cat/index.html
You can buy these in a few other places online, too.

That list I posted is just an intro or sampler to people basically unfamiliar with horror. I purposely left out a lot of stuff like the well known classics (like Bela's Dracula) and stuff best left for more interested fans.

Based on the ones I am familiar with SiBurning has a great list. Here are some of my favorites from his list...

Freaks (1932) [Warner]
Real, live circus freaks.
Not a scary movie but definitely a good Halloween movie. Good movie at anytime. Fascinating and touching.

The Old Dark House (1932) (Kino) Karloff
The quintessential old dark house movie.
Of course, like any good haunted house movie, nothing much happens until...
Enough said.
Directed by James Whale of Frankenstein (and better yet Bride of Frankenstein) fame. DVD includes very interesting commentary by Gloria Stewart and interview with Curtis Harrington who dug this print out of obscurity. Karloff is in the movie, but his part is almost a cameo (not quite). The real stars are the ensemble cast -- Ernest ("have a potato") Thesiger, Eva ("it'll rot") Moore, Melvyn Douglas, Raymond Massey, Gloria Stuart, Lilian Bond, and surprisingly Charles Laughton!

Cat People (1942) (Prod. Val Lewton)
Sexy and subtley kinky or at least suggestive. About all you could get away with under the Hollywood production code at the time.
She turns into a leopard. Or does she only think she does?
More of a mystery that a true horror film.
Anything produced by Val Lewton that was directed by Jacques Tourneur is worth as look. Cat People is the archetype. I also recommend I Walked With a Zombie.

The Innocents (1961)
Classic early gothic. Two children are possessed by ghosts. Or is it all just in the governess' head?
Best movie version of The Turn of the Screw (by Henry James).
One of the best in this list.

SiBurning: I thought I was the only person on earth that had seen the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari!

I'm going to reccomend Serpent and the Rainbow even creepier when you keep in mind that it was "based" on true events. (kinda)

Excellent film! I forgot about this one, and as always a conversation about The Serpent and The Rainbow inevitably leads to the even creepier and better Angel Heart.

lovecraft night

From Beyond---great
the Reanimator--good

the unnameable--silly,good
and there is an 80's horror movie starring either micheal nouri or chris sarandon that was pretty good about a fellow who dabbles with an antique book and gets a lot more than he desired.i think it was not credited as a HPL derivation.

I'd recommend Pumpkinhead. Pretty good story, and the monster was really cool.... one of Stan Winston's early creations. The sequel, Pumpkinhead 2, stunk. But if you want to see a grown up Punky Brewster try her hand at acting, go for it.

Don

+1 on Pumpkinhead. Along similar lines is The Evil Dead. A very different beast than its sequel.

Necronomicon?

If not, maybe you'll find it in my list of Lovecraft films. A * just means I have it on DVD. If anyone can fill in which stories the other films are from, please let me know. One of these days I have to make a list of Poe on film.

C'mon guys...The Reanimator? Seriously? I mean, its not really for this forum...but when the decapitated head starts making out with the bound chick, it really kinda went south for me...

The Call of Cthulhu (2005)
A silent film made by The H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society, this is by far the best Lovecraft-based film available.-

What a fantastic movie! Every frame is a labor of love and it shows. Thanks for listing all of the Lovecraft adaptations too. I wish that there were more good ones. Any recommendations out of the newer ones? I actually thought that "Dreams in the Witch House" captured something of the feel of Lovecraft. Anything else?

I agree...there are some excellent thriller/horror films discussed here that are above the level of some of the others. Reanimator is way at the bottom. Scary movies for adults...The Shining; Silence of The Lambs; etc. Scary movies for adults and younger...28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later; and lots of others here. Not scary, or silly, or shocking, or (worst) horror porn, for children...Saw series; Hostel; Reanimator; etc.

By the way, the earlier mention of M really stirred me. I love that film and do not think of it as a thriller but more of a political commentary. Thinking on it now though, it must have been tantamount to The Silence of The Lambs when it was released.

So...in that I guess a lot of the above should be considered "guilty pleasures," if you will, I will toss in mine. Prince of Darkness by John Carpenter. I recall a bunch of buddies and our dates going to see this one Friday night in the 80s and being so scared at the end, we were weak kneed. No joke.

Excellent film! I forgot about this one, and as always a conversation about The Serpent and The Rainbow inevitably leads to the even creepier and better Angel Heart.

Serpent and the Rainbow isn't bad, although the book is better. I read it on an off-season vacation with my wife to a Caribbean resort--not a good choice. The isolated old plantation-style hotel where we were staying was next to empty and I would sit out on the veranda in the evening reading. Got a little creepy.

Nosferatu is a timeless classic. We're actually going to see it on Halloween at the Disney Concert Hall here in L.A. It'll be accompanied with live organ music. It should be great!

Another vote for The Innocents (1961). It has a pretty creepy feel to it, definitely a good Halloween movie.

Although not scary, I also like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Sleepy Hollow. I think they're great Halloween Movies.

I remember when the "twist" became apparent in Angel Heart.....chilling.
oohh, I love that movie... I haven't seen in over a decade, time to rent it again.
