I think the greatest lyrics are in the many versions of I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You by Sam Thread. This version, by Louis Armstrong and Louis Jordan, lacks some of the classic lines (when you're buried six feet deep, no more fried chicken will you eat), but overall it's my favorite.

I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you
I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you
You know you done me wrong
You stole my wife and gone
I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you

I'm gonna kill you just for fun, you rascal you
I'm gonna kill you just for fun, you rascal you
I'm gonna kill you just for fun
The bugs can have you when I'm done
I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you

You asked my wife for some cabbage, you dog
I said, you asked my wife for some cabbage, you old rascal
You asked my wife for some cabbage
And you eat just like a savage
You ol' rascal (ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha)

Now there ain't no use in you runnin', you ol' rascal you
There ain't no use in runnin' you rascal you
There ain't no use in you to run
'Cause I done went to the pawn shop and got my gun
Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

You messed with my wife, you rascal you
Yes, you messed with my wife, you rascal you
You've messed with my wife
Now I'm gonna take your life
I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you

Now I wonder, wonder what you've got, you rascal you
I said, I wonder what you've got, you rascal you
I said, I wonder what you got
That makes my wife think you so hot
(ha-ha-ha-ha) you old dog

'Each Coming Night', by Iron and Wine

Will you say when I'm gone away
"My lover came to me and we'd lay
In rooms unfamiliar but until now"

Will you say to them when I'm gone
"I loved your son for his sturdy arms
We both learned to cradle then live without"

Will you say when I'm gone away
'Your father's body was judgement day
We both dove and rose to the riverside"

Will you say to me when I'm gone
"Your face has faded but lingers on
Because light strikes a deal with each coming night"

One of the most beautiful and moving songs ever written. Brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it.

One of my favorites by the dead:

Me and my uncle went ridin' down,
South Colorado, West Texas bound.
We stopped over in Santa Fe,
That bein' the point just about half way,
And you know it was the hottest part of the day.

I took the horses up to the stall,
Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all.
Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt,
It bein' summer, I took off my shirt,
And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt.

When Texas cowboys, they's all around,
With liquor and money, they loaded down.
So soon after payday, know it seemed a shame;
You know my uncle, he starts a friendly game,
High-low jack and the winner take the hand.

My uncle starts winnin'; cowboys got sore.
One of them called him, and then two more,
Accused him of cheatin'; Oh no, it couldn't be.
I know my uncle, he's as honest as me,
And I'm as honest as a Denver man can be.

One of them cowboys, he starts to draw,
And I shot him down, Lord he never saw.
Well I grabbed a bottle, cracked him in the jaw,
Shot me another, oh damn he won't grow old.
In the confusion, my uncle grabbed the gold,
And we high-tailed it down to Mexico.

I love those cowboys, I love their gold,
I loved my uncle, God rest his soul,
Taught me good, Lord, Taught me all I know
Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold
And I left his dead *** there by the side of the road.

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned ...

Rush - Subdivisions

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
Geometric order an insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided, the future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided in the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone

Subdivisions

In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out

Subdivisions

In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Where some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere to relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights

Subdivisions

In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out

Subdivisions

In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth
The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
The restless dreams of youth
