THOR's first shaving brush-related question

I'm a newbie to these forums, and traditional wetshaving as a whole. My inaugural thread is here (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=149178), and this post in particular may be relative to my inquiry.

As a prelude to discussing brushes, I'd like some input on the cup in which I'm planning to use for my brush/lather process. This is my father's US Navy mug, from which he drank while aboard ship (the USS Cook (DE 1083), according to the mug). It's not only a little on the small side, but it's very thick-walled, I assume to help it survive falls and drops aboard ship during swells and such. I love this mug, but I don't drink anything that typically comes out of one (unlike my two pot-per-day father).
One reason I enjoy the idea of getting into a more traditionalist wet-shaving is because I remember seeing my father's shave gear, primarily his brush, sitting on the bathroom counter. Not knowing my father well, this connection strikes me in a happy place.
With an internal diameter of about 2¾-inches (at the mouth, it tapers downward little) and depth of almost three inches (for 291.24 cubic centimeters or 2.92 deciliters, for those curious), how feasible is it to use this mug for generating lather? Are there any high-quality brushes that'll fit? How stringently does anybody recommend against using such a small vessel? In his videos, mantic59 uses a mug the size of a small serving bowl for his, but never addresses the possibility or capability of using something smaller. Lastly, in favor of the small mug, I have very limited space in my bathroom (and apartment as a whole for that matter).

I use a mug that I have put a puck of shave soap in. I use it mostly just to load the brush and lather on my face. It's a handy vessel for shave soap. You could you use something a little larger like a cappuccino mug or a small ramekin. Although mugs are fine.

As far as brushes, you will get bombarded with recommendations unless you can kinda give a ball park range of some specifics, starting with a dollar amount is a an easy way to start. Great brushes in every price range. Some good threads that are stickied about the topic of selecting a brush.

Face-lathering is a great way to save space, and it's fun. You can still make that heirloom mug a part of your shaves. Just mill some soap into it, or use it to soak your brush before you lather.

Whether you choose to face-lather or bowl-lather, I'm a proponent of boar brushes. I like them for a very simple reason: they are the best value for money in the brush market. You can see my own lineup at http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=142036 - two badgers and three boars. Most of my shaves use either the Omega 81052 (less than $20) or the Rooney 3/1/F ($150 or more, if you can find one). The Rooney is a little nicer-looking, but the Omega's performance is just as good.

Any cup can be used for a soap mug, just some folks prefer one with a wider opening so you're not doing the "clink-clink-clink" thing in the morning when SWMBO is still snoozing.

Was your Dad on the Cook when it and the USS Mars collided off the coast of San Diego?
I was on the Mars then.
From Wikipedia entry for USS Mars;

"On 14 May 1979, USS Cook (FF-1083) and Mars (AFS-1) collided off Point Loma near San Diego, CA, injuring seven."

He might've been, actually. I've sent an inquiry to my step-mother (father doesn't internet), and she'll get back to me later. Your "Veteran" tag on your header intrigues me; are you retired Navy? Father was Army first, and then Navy; I went AF for six years, and am now pursuing my bachelor's.

Thanks for the input on the mug!

Yep, if you are a Veteran make sure you check in here;

If you post in the Forum, they will read it, and you'll get your tag. There's not many Mods who are working on tags, so be patient. They will get to you.

Finally got a reply; my father served aboard the Cook from '73-77, so he missed the '79 collision. Sorry the two of you never met. :^)

I was going to welcome you in your inaugural post, but I thought there would be a good possibility you're finished with that thread. So, having said that, welcome to B&B from a fellow St. Louisan.
