I've started using Thayers alcohol free toner after I shave.I also use an aftershave balm which goes on first or does it really matter?

Use the Thayer's to help close your pores. Then apply the balm.

I put a dab of ASB in my palm and then pour some Thayers into that and mix it together, I remember reading Mama Bear post about it, and I like it much better than applying both separately.
Thayers first or mixed, thayers will take the lotion off. I use it even if the asb as WH. Gets the residue off is also an antseptic. Plus feels good
After a cold water rinse, I put some Thayer's on a round cotton pad (the square ones fall apart), and use that to wipe off the post-shave flotsam. Then I proceed with the A/S. Scrubbing with Witch Hazel on a cotton pad also has the added bonus of removing grease and keeping pimples at bay.
