What's new

Technical/Drafting pens?

I find myself in need of a .5mm technical pen. Are there any vintage examples I should look out for? I don't mind buying new, but if it's possible to get a higher quality pen for the same or less money I like to go secondhand.

Staedtler Mars 700 - these were available in a number of sizes. (I have both a 3x0 and 4x0 - .1 mm & .18 mm respectively) I found the .1 mm on ebay for something like $7. I bought the .18 mm new about 35 years ago for a lot more than that.

Have you considered disposable tech pens? Drafting and art supply stores sell them in various sizes, usually for less than $2 each. However, whereas with a Rapidograph pen you can press down with moderate force, the disposables require a lighter touch, but that's easy to get accustomed to.

I have three sets of Rapidographs, but nowadays, if I need the tech pen, I just grab the disposable.
