If you were going to make a Japanese style straight what steel would you use? My friend is a very talented knife maker and I am thinking of having him make something special.

Any high carbon steel will work just fine. If he's a talented knife marker he shouldn't have a problem picking the right steel.
Tim, who is your knife maker friend? Does he have a website?

He is a local guy who makes custom knives for guys out here. I will try to post some pics.
Def want to see. I know a few knife/sword makers that are actually very highly regarded but making a razor is a different skillset due to grinding etc.
Doesn't have to be anything fancy. Regular 1080 steel takes a very comfy edge.
1080 would work fine but I wouldn't suggest going any lower with the carbon content.
Brian hit the nail on the head, any high carbon steel should be fine. I'm not an expert in this area but from my understanding making straights is a bit different than making knives but if he is talented then I look forward to seeing the result.
