What's new

My Guess... 3017

Started on the TOBS Sandalwood. Lovely start to the month. Also in the one blade in February challenge. Going to mix up the razors for every shave and mix the AS as much as I can too.

So does it count as 3017 if I have one soap at a time, but take the occasional (once or twice a month) day off and use something else? The Palmolive is calling to me, but I know 2 months (I shave on alternate days) is too much to ignore some of my other soaps and creams.
Once or twice a month would still qualify as a 3017 to me.

Gig, I looked back at how this little old journey started. I think this was johnnigold's 3rd or 4th post in the thread. He was asked about his intentions. Here is his response:

I think that is the plan Shawn. I intend on using the C&E and the Pre de Provence for the majority of my shaves until they are done allowing of course for the occasional dalliance with Pen's English Fern or DR Harris Lavender amongst others.

Here is your question:

So, you can do what you like, with the intent of using your soaps up. Keep us informed of your progress.

Just remember, gents, that this is supposed to be fun. There are no hard and fast rules here, so if you feel like hopping off the wagon, please do so. Hop back on if and when you feel like it. Do you want to periodically use a cream or soap just because.....? Do it! No one here will think any less of you because you felt like trying something new for a little variety, or picked up a new soap/cream and want to try it.

Had my second shave today with MdC. I think it will take me a couple more shaves to get it dialed in. My brush seems to be a lather hog and I seem to be making enough to do at least another 3-4 passes. The jar weighed 520g (with the lid removed) and was 519g so I may be working on this soap for awhile (that isn't a bad thing).

Next week I travel for work and I am not looking forward to the extra heft the MdC will add to my suitcase.

I hit 100 shaves last night with my tub of T&H Rose shaving cream. I am definitely on the home stretch now that a huge hole has formed at the bottom. Recently, I've been leaving the cap off at night after I shave so the remaining product has not turned into a wet slush. I might have 2 or 3 shaves left - I'll update again with a full report when this tub goes bye-bye.

Full thoughts on the MdC thread, but it's WAY easier to work with than MWF. Also, down about 1g on the scale after two uses.

As of tomorrow I will begin 3017'in half a puck of Col Conk's Almond. Couldn't figure out how to get best lather with this puck, so I thought 3017'in it would help!

100 shaves from a tub of "Cream" is impressive....heck, 100 shaves from any lather product is impressive. :thumbup1:

ABCBA sample finished up. Liked the soap in that it was effortless with nice performance.

I've decided against doing a bunch of samples. I have way more soap than I should. I know it won't go bad and will still be waiting for me a few years from now, but I'd rather offload what I don't love and focus on enjoying the ones I do love.

Small problem, not exactly sure what I love yet.

So, I'm going on a journey of 1-2 weeks per soap. I certainly exemplify that it can take longer than that to dial in a soap, but I feel it'll be a good enough test to weed out the weaker performers and draw a line between them somewhere.

I will be keeping up here to stay connected with you guys but plan to start a thread in the journal section to keep track of notes. For now, here's my planned order of evaluation (subject to change).

AoS tallow
HTGAM 1.0
B&M tallow
RazoRock old tallow
Stirling
RazoRock Argan oil
RazoRock La Famiglia
Mama Bear's

I have a few others but these are the ones I really want to know how I feel about.

I finally gave the 3017 treatment to my 1997 F-150 extended cab. I purchased it new in 1997 and wouldn't you know it, 173,000 miles later the transmission gave out. $3000 replacement mininum, so I went and found an Izuzu Hombre (1998) with 67,671 actual miles for $2700. I hope to make it last another 18 years.

I've heard those Hombres are tanks.

Day one of the MdC - I agree with the rest, this soap is gonna take a bit of dialing in. I'm gonna try sticking with one brush while I relearn the ways of the MdC.

I'm sooo close. This soap is taking foorreevveerrr. I started it on 10/23 and figure I've got 50+ shaves out of it. I really like the scent, performance and everything about the soap; I am just very much ready for something different. I'm going to push on to the end, though. I really want to finish one soap straight through so I can say that I've done it. I think for my future 3017 victims, I'll just be cutting off 2oz chunks from a puck and putting it in a mug.

The Mike's gave it up this morning...43 shaves from 124g puck = 2.9g/shave. About what I expected from a softer soap like Mike's.

Very good, though. The scent is outstanding, and the performance was top notch.

In a complete shift of plans, I'm going with a nearly new tub of Acca Kappa 1869 cream. I'll have to scale the whole thing, then the tub at the end to get usage.

This Scottish Fine Soap refuses to die. I've decided to stop rotating my brushes and select my best soap killers to finish it off. Bring out the big badgers!

I don't load like I hate it but I got 14 shaves on a half ounce sample of B&M soap. I figure that means my Leviathan would last at least 100 if I 3017ed it.

I love the jar for Hallows.
