What's new

"Manly" Magazine

Esquire seems to have its ups and doors, but I find I generally like it, when I get around to reading it, which is not that often.

Does car porn like Car & Driver count?

Cook's Illustrated supposedly has a large percent male readership. I read that!

Playboy used to be a different magazine altogether and there was a time when it seemed relevant. That was about 35 years ago.

While I have not looked at it much, Playboy recently launched http://www.thesmokingjacket.com/ which was there attempt at getting more web traffic during the 9-5 workday without getting people fired. It's a non-nude version of Playboy, for the web. It might fit the bill, although I do not think that it is also a print edition.

EDIT: Upon further inspection, It seems a lot closer to the likes of Maxim and FHM... for what it's worth.

Not too much, from the look of it.

It's a shame. Playboy has gone in entirely the wrong direction, IMO. There are already way too many magazines with all that stuff. As the OP suggested, what the market is missing is an entertaining magazine for older guys with half a brain.

Playboy went the wrong direction, and Hugh Hefner truly went the wrong direction. Once upon a time at least he held himself out as something of a thinking man. And something of a cool guy. I do not think one wants to at the end of one'd days be basically the punchline for jokes.

Hugh Hefner ended up being Chris Rock's "old guy in the club." Not cool at all. Terrifyingly not cool at all for someone I bet some of us used to look up to and want to be like!

Yeah, eventually I guess it's easy to become a parody of yourself. Still... the man has "lived the dream" for almost sixty years. I'm interested to see if either of his younger sons take any sort of interest in the magazines future. Or whether they are just going to spend their time spending the inheritance. Can't be long now before one of those blonds does Hugh in.

you might want to take a look at Gray's Sporting Journal and Garden and Guns both upscale with good writing. Also, AOM.. sign up for their almost daily newsletter their article about shaving a few months ago is how I ended up here.

Thanks for more suggestions.

Cigar Aficionado is a great magazine... though I try to limit my cigar consumption. Hard to do when looking at pictures of a 70 year old legendary Cuban tobacconist hand rolling cigars.

I was not aware of Monocle. Will definitely check out.

I read most of the mags and sites that have been mentioned, but I would like to add one that I peruse quite often.

The Modern Drunkard

http://www.drunkard.com/

I enjoy the tongue-in-cheek humor, usually in the evening while I enjoy a gin and tonic. If you can find a copy of the book, it's a good read, has some good tips for parties, drink recipes, and lots of humor.

I suppose its "the dream." He probably should have stayed in Chicago. The sunny weather can turn one shallow.

Partly, I suppose, whether you want to be Mick Jagger or be Bill Wyman. Nobody at the end of the day is all that impressed that one "laid more pipe than the Mario Brothers." Ask Wilt Chamberlin!

Men's Fashion: Esquire has better content regarding fashion and decent journalists and is less foo-foo than GQ. The prints ads in both magazines are another matter for another day.

Men's Journal is better than Men's Health (no I don't shave my chest and I don't want to take chemicals so I can lift 400 pounds).
