Head Shaving with a Straight Razor

My brain can’t process opposite mirrors. Which direction am I going looking in a reflected image in a mirror? And I find I have no depth perception that way.

so I just go blind by touch. Havent lost that much blood....

I have the same issue. Can't process the image I'm seeing!

- Alum block and styptic pencil for the inevitable nicks.

Tricks and tips:

- Some alum on the fingertips can increase one's confidence in gripping the blade.

Last night I realised something really important about alum.

Basically if you get it on your skin or worse in your brush, it will wreck the slickness in your lather. The lather will look fine and probably feel OK under the fingers, but the razor won't glide.

Signs & symptoms:

- razor stuttering over the skin
- failure to get a slick lather regardless of the amount of soap & water added

Rx:

- rinse the brush thoroughly
- dry it by shaking
- rinse the top of the puck if the soap's contaminated
- wash the skin thoroughly using a bath soap & flannel
- lightly lather the brush up, rinse & dry again
- begin again
- only apply alum / styptic once you're happy with the shave

I used alum daily and for some reason I stopped a few months ago. I find that a witch hazel splash prior to balm and AS is all I need.
