Having taught for over a decade before switching careers, I heard this refrain all too often! If Thomas Jefferson was a typical student today, no doubt the language used wouldn't be as poetic.

It would be eight more years until the colonies were truly independent.

My friend, I needed that, if for no other reason than to remind me that us proud and mostly ignorant Americans come from good stock, and that I actually DO have something in common with a Founding Father! Thank you.

Darwin doesn't always apply - like fireworks & drunk drivers. We had a death in the neighborhood from a rocket a year or so back .. the moron who lit it got clean away ..

But on the Fourth, I get the earplugs out and crank up Cagney's Yankee Doodle Dandy .. always get weepy at the two points when the Lincoln Memorial is shown, and when JC tap dances down the stairs at the White House
