Gillette Guard -- my new favorite

I often wait too long to shave my head. Then for an easy headshave, I have to use electric clippers -- a cordless Beardscape or Andis T-Outlner. (The torque on the plugin Andis causes them to jump when first turned on!)

However, I usually go with wet shaving using a Defender razor, Gillette Fusion, or Mach 3. But lately I've discovered a more effective razor for mowing down hair after I've gone too long without a headshave. The Gillette Guard. It's a cheap plastic razor with refills that is popular in India and is not available in US stores. Being single bladed, it doesn't clog like other razors. It pivots like a modern razor and what's more it's ridiculously cheap, at least in India, I think less than 50 cents.

The best place I've found to get the Guard is on eBay.

Don't get confused. This is NOT Gillette's highly-touted Skin Guard razor which does get clogged and is way less effective.

I couldn't agree more, the Guard is fantastic for head shaving, the cartridge blade is very sharp (for first use) and it contours to the curves around my crown and temple area. I do find that it loses its sharpness after first use, so it is mostly "two and done" for me. The cartridges are pretty inexpensive, it is still a shame to go through them so fast.

I read about those in the context of Gillette product development. I believe it was another go at making a blade for use in third world countries. The first try, the Atra, evidently failed to take into account a fundamental consideration, that their target market often do not have access to running water. The Guard is designed to rinse easily in a bowl. Or something like that - I might be a little weak on specifics there. Based on that I ordered some of them and tried it once and got three solid shaves out of a single blade. I never really got back to them but I recall being very impressed by the design and the shaves that I got - not just good-for-what-it-is, but objectively good shaves. I also ordered the Guard 3 but never did try those. Someday.
