You should not consider the "shadow" a problem. It's simply proof that you are a grown man.

It mostly has to do with the color of your beard. As someone who has jet black hair, no matter how BBS my shave is there is still some 'shadowing'... I agree with the posters who say that cartridge razors minimize that look by cutting the hairs below the skin - but that's also the main culprit of ingrown hairs and irritation. As long as it's relatively smooth, SWMBO has never minded...

May I also add the following female viewpoint, from Basenotes.

I adore it when men are clean-shaven, but have that masculine "blue" cast under the skin.
