Long ago, I learned my lesson the hard way, unfortunately, on a Series-70 Colt Cup Nat. Match (still SMH).
Back in the day, 1911-philes referred to them as combat marks, as they were practically standard-issue on (non-arsenal reworked) surplus USGI 1911A1s. Not one for stolen valor, the gouge on my Gold Cup was - and remains- an idiot mark.
Prevention:
Tape (electrical)
Notched Slide Stops-
Can be filed @ home (below, left) or purchased from Wilson Combat or Ed Brown. The notch eliminates the need for upward movement when reinstalling a slide stop.
Erasing idiot marks (stainless steel)-
