Accessory/stand-alone vest?

Do any of y’all watch Last Man Standing, the new(er) sitcom with Tim Allen? On that show, his boss is portrayed by Hector Elizondo and, on occasion, he (Hector) wears a vest over a button-down shirt. The back is colored the same as the front, so it seems as though its meant to be worn as a stand-alone piece, and not just part of a suit, or anything. I really like the way this looks and would like to add one to my wardrobe. Is anyone familiar with the item in question and could offer a suggestion of where I might look for one? Thanks!

I've seen (and worn) really nice vests that don't require a jacket; suede front, tweed, etc. I think that the trick is to make sure that it is complimentary/harmonious with the rest of the clothes you are wearing, while being a bit different. Here's a link to a suede/pigskin vest in the Peterman catalog: http://www.jpeterman.com/Sport-Coats-Suits/Suede-Pigskin-Vest This is a bit too pricey, but probably quite nice with the right shirt, slacks and shoes. Really a question of style. I really don't care for the hipster thing, with a vest and a t-shirt.

+1. If you have a solid colored vest mix it up with a plaid that's proportional to your size. For a patterned vest use a shirt with either a subtle pattern (of different proportion to the vest's pattern) or solid shirt with or without texture. I love vests mainly because it keeps my core warm. It's great for an office or for teaching (I'm in a cold class but move around frequently). Experiment with them. They're not too old man if you do it right.

Maybe a Filson Mackinaw wool vest?

Although I confess that I started looking at this site for a Chesterfield Style Overcoat with hacking pockets, but I am really tempted by their vests (a/k/a/ waistcoats) which can be ordered with the same cloth back (vs the satin backs that go with suits).
