Interesting how important staying clean shaven was back in those days. Since I have been wet shaving (all of 7 weeks) I tend to pay more attention to other men's grooming habits. I would say only 20% of today's men remain clean shaven, meaning no facial hair at all on a regular basis to include heavy whiskers. Having facial hair today seems to be the more desired look.
