What's new

Any other Kiwis on here?

I said hi in the noob forum and no one spoke up. Just wondering if there are any guys in New Zealand on here and if so do they have any sources for decent shaving gear locally?

I know of the shaver shop in Auckland for blades and Crabtree and Evelyn in Newmarket for soaps as well as one place in Chch that sells Trumpers (the ONLY place in NZ according to Trumpers themselves).

Things look pretty dire here so ordering from the US/UK (as I usually do) seems the best option I guess.

Hi Simon, welcome to B&B.

There are a couple of Kiwi's here, but don't see them post that often. Just thought I'd say 'hi' and offer a nice welcome.

Not a Kiwi, but I'm in the neighbourhood at least. A very warm welcome to B&B. I hope you enjoy the place and can prod a few more Kiwis into joining.

Cheers

I'm not a Kiwi, but I'm married to one, and I just got back from a visit to NZ. I saw lots of Imperial Leather shave cream, Mennen shave cream and Mennen shave sticks in the Four Square grocery chain. There were also some Tabac shave cream and shave sticks in one of the big Aukland department stores - can't remember the name, but it was the tonier of the two big ones. DE blades seemed to be almost non-existant. THe smaller rural antique shops had lots of Gotta and Bengall straight razors.:w00t: The best selections of those I found were in Geraldine and Omarama. Didn't get time to look in the North Island.

Best Regards

Thanks for the welcome chaps. As I said NZ is a bit dire for shaving stuff unfortunately but we make do!

Graham, you can't remember the name of the department store at all can you? It wasn't Smith and Caugheys was it? Was it on Queen Street? That's the main 'posh' store we have here that I know of.

Also thanks for the Shaver Shop link. I was actually in Sydney a few months ago and did pay them a visit down there in one of the weird underground shopping centers. They weren't much better than the shaver shop here to be honest!

Luckily the NZ dollar is high against the US (or is the US low?) so at the moment buying and having stuff shipped works out to be pretty reasonable.

Drawn a complete blank on the name of the store, but yes it's on Queen St. right downtown: Somewhere between the ferry terminal and Chancery St., on the right as you walk up from the harbour.

As I recall they wanted $27.98 Kiwi for the shavestick, so I just didn't ask about the cream. SWMBO was standing right next to me at the time, and from her reaction I could tell that if I spent that kind of money on a bar of soap, life wouldn't be worth living for at least a week.

They had some nice looking best badger brushes too.

I forgot to add that the pharmacy right across the road from the Glen Eden train station carries Kappus shave cream. Kappus smells like aloe vera and lathers like crazy. It's really nice and costs only $2 - $3 for 2.5 oz. tube.

Best Regards

Hi Graham, hmmmm not sure where you could mean but I am not far from there so will go for a walk in a few days time.

I actually have a tube of Kappus cream. The place I get my blades form has it and as you say it is cheap. I use that one when I travel instead of taking a soap along!

As I say it is honestly cheaper for me to buy things in the US and have them shipped. I know of two places in NZ to get Alum blocks from and both charge about $25-30NZ (over $20US)!

I often wonder if I could start a little side business importing decent shaving goods down here!

Directions were never my forte, so I asked SWMBO about it, and yes it was Smith & Caughey's where we saw the Tabac.

That pharmacy across from the Glen Eden station had some alum sticks of the type sold as antiperspirant too - same as an alum block, basically, and something like $5 NZ. Needless to say I bought one.

Best Regards

Ah, tell her thanks! Have to wander into town tomorrow night so might pop in before that and see if they have it. I also discovered some chemists (drug stores in US speak) have Tabac soap also. Works out to be about $20US here for the 125g (4.4oz) refill. Might have to get some to try.

hi asciisimon. don't know if you're still active but i've just joined and live in wellington.

you may have heard of www.mancave.co.nz by now - it may even be your shop!

anyway i just bought some supplies from there so that's definitely the best bet at the moment. good prices too!

The kiwis should join the great southern land social group. Despite the name being a wee bit Australian-centric you would be welcome I'm sure :001_smile
